Hello,

my mom and dad are giving me their Marriott timeshare week for 2007. They own in Palm Springs and Newport Beach. I would like to go to Maui, Kaui or Oahu, the new resort on Saint Thomas, Myrtle Beach or Boston. Our timeframe would be mid July-mid August check in.

If we do hawaii or Saint Thomas, we want to be at a beach where we can swim. Does that work at the Marriott resorts? (or are the beaches more for walking on, not swimming)

Is this at all realistic?

We are giving them a week in our San Diego timeshare (Capri By The Sea), so that's why they are giving us one of theirs. Maybe not a totally fair trade for them, but they are happy with our Capri location.

Thanks

JT

You don't say which of the two timeshares and what season the timeshare week is that you're getting. If, for example, they make reservations for a high-season (summer) Newport week and put in a trade request by sometime next month, you should be able to get just about any Marriott trade you want, especially if you have some considerable flexibility on dates.

Conversely, if they reserve a low-season (summer) Palm Springs week, you'll likely need to lower your sights somewhat for the exchange you might get.

Take your pick of the beachfront Marriotts. You can swim at all of them. Boston is the only timeshare you mention where there would be no beach on the resort's property.

Well, my mom did deposit a Newport Beach week, but I'm not sure the season. We couldn't request Boston, as they only have occupancy for up to 4, and we need 5. So I will be hoping Oahu, Maui or Myrtle Beach open up.

I would think you could get Ko'Olina. They seem to have a lot of availability at the moment, as they are opening up new buildings. Maui will be, too, but I'm not sure the first of the new buildings will be done by then. I have no feel for prime season in Hawaii, but I would guess July-Aug might be near-prime, if only due to school vacation. Prime season for me would be Jan-Feb, when you can take advantage of the weather.
As far as the beach, the Maui Ocean Club is on the beach. Ko'Olina is on a series of man-made "beach lagoons", as the coast there is very rocky. Maui has a very beautiful "natural" beach. Both are right on the resorts, though. Even the lagoons are real ocean water---just nice sand in an artifically half-round shape without a lot of waves. Snorkelling is good at these, though.

You should be able to pull a week in Hawaii with no problem. It will be very difficult to pull a 2 bedroom since most owners lockoff before depositing (thus, extremely low inventory being deposited).

My son is getting married on Kauai in 2 weeks and (in addition to 8 units at non-Marriott resorts) I managed to exchange 4 Marriott units (ranging from a lock-off at Grand Chateau to a 2 bdrm. at Cypress Harbour) for 4 units at Kauai Beach. We will have 35 family members blanketing Kauai for a week :whoopie:

During my exchange searches I saw many eff and 1 bdrm at Ko'Olina, Maui and Kauai. I had also had requests in for what I wanted. The key is to make your request early and be as flexible as possible. Also, continue to search on line - for whatever reason the system occasionally misses the match.

Good luck!
