Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

I've deposited my 2007 week, and am considering my exchange options. One of the exchanges I'm considering is for a week with check in of April 29, and check out of May 6.

However, I can't use the full week. I don't actually want to check in until May 2. Will the resort give the room away if I don't show up on 4/29? I suppose I should call the resort and arrange for a late arrival - which means I've just answered my own question.

Oh well. I'm interested in seeing your experiences with these matters.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

If you want to check in late it is always prudent to inform the resort of this ahead of time, or you're right, they may well declare you a "no show" and give your room to somebody else. Be sure to get a name of who you talked to (and confirmation number if they'll give you one) and keep it with your records for this exchange.

Human error is not unheard of here, though. We arranged for a day late checkin once and when we arrived we were told they had marked us as "no-shows". Fortunately our unit was still available. I think it did keep us from getting any promotional calls from their staff, though.

Yes if you don't call they could give your room away. But like you said "suppose I should call the resort and arrange for a late arrival " if you call you'll have no problems at all.

BE sure to tell them it's NOT OK for them to have someone else using the room during the days before you check in. I saw a thread here a couple months ago where someone arrived a day late and they had someone in the room and had to wait for their room for hours. Since it should have been their room the day before they should have expected the room ready for them if they had arrived at 7am.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

Thanks for the advice!!

I will call the resort in advance, then again on my registered "check-in" day, and a third time the day before my arrival. I'll advise them that my exact arrival date is uncertain to help ensure that they leave the room empty. Sadly, the resort is supposedly in the midst of a refurbishment, so I'll probably end up with the worst unit in the joint...

Sorry for posting in the improper thread.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

Yes, you should always call the resort and make arrangements for any other than the normal check-in.

On the other hand, has anyone actually known a resort to give an unit reserved for an exchange away to someone else? I have never heard of that. I guess I missed the previous thread.

It is not theirs to give to someone else.

Many years ago friends of ours were going to Westgate in Orlando after the Daytonna 500 in February. With traffic after the race, they arrived at Westgate later then planned. Maybe around 8pm or so and there room was gone. They were not even a day late, just a few hours. They did not notify me until Monday am and I immediately called RCI and if I recall they were put elsewhere. Westgate sent them to some dump for the Sunday night. They had the GC and everything and the resort had no right giving away their unit.

If we are going to be late, I always notify the resort and especially if not arriving on the check in day. I have had no problems doing this.

Since this incident I have been very against Westgate.

Winners Circle has a "Blue Monday" rule which they repeatedly remind owners of. The Blue Monday rule means that if you haven't checked into your unit by Monday morning and you haven't arranged for late arrival, your use is forfeited and the unit goes into the rental pool. I don't know if this rule also applies to exchanges.

We have checked in late but we always call the resort to let them know our plans. We have never had a problem.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

I have checked in a day or 2 late at least a half dozen times but I always call ahead to notify the front desk. Usually a few days ahead and then the first day of checkin to remind them.

I usually also call a few days ahead to check my reservation is there. When I make an exchange through II the name the reservation is in comes out in an unexpected way because of the names on the account so sometimes I like to know what name I am checking in under.

I am glad you mentioned that. My hubby and I have different names so our account looks funny too. First name is set up Michelle/Shane last names are set up the same way. Kind of odd the first time you see it.

No, I meant a real resort, like Steve's example.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

Yeah, I know some do it to owners, but I don't see how they could to exchangers. As we all know, rights to that unit/week belong to the exchange company, so they would have to give permission to the resort to rent it out.

I don't see why that logic would preclude it from applying to exchangers.

When deposited, the the owner's rights, obligations, and limitations transfer to the exchange company. So if the owner's use could be cancelled for no-show on Monday, doesn't it follow that the same limitation would apply to the deposit?

Now it might be that the resort would choose to not enforce that limitation on usage if the unit is depositied for exchange. But I don't see any a priori reason to exclude that limitation from the other rights and limitations that do accompany an exchange company deposit.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

No.

Unless that restriction was communicated to the exchange company and they agreed to it, and then communicated it to the exchanger, and they agreed to it when they confirmed the exchange.

That's a bit of a stretch.

But as we all know, in the timeshare industry those who make the rules can do anything they want, m/l.

Re: Do you have to check in on "check in" day?

I always call in to the resort. Even if I am going to be arriving late night. I had Marriott give away my 2 bedroom week. All they had left was a 1 bedroom. Another time I had Westgate... that was kind of my fault I forgot about it, it was at Park City and I live in SLC, it was a get away. It made me real sad.

Live and learn...... Now I have my reserve weeks plastered all over every calendar, computer, etc.
