Snow for Spring Break

I live in Florida and wanted to take the kids to see snow for the first time, but did not want to drive too far north. What states would have snow for Spring Break in March. I am not sure if TN or NC in the mountains would still have snow at this time of year. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Don

unless you have fluke snow, you most likely need to FLY!!

MArch is VERy IFFY--even in mid-atlantic. Snowshoe W. VA is your best bet--but quite a drive and you could still be out of luck. Even out West, March is starting to get slushy in colo and utah, but still pretty good compared to East.

NWA tends to have decent coupons to fly anywhere in US to Canada--Whistler is a good bet (I have Fla friends who fly there for spring break for skiing).

sorry, but for TN and NC in March, you are really rolling the dice. But
if I absolutely had to go to somewhere in the mid-atlantic for skiing in march, I would pick snowshoe.

Re: Snow for Spring Break

We live in Tennessee and a couple of times we've had to modify our own travel plans for Spring break to get out of town before bad weather. You're MUCH more likely to get ice than snow here in March. Maybe some snow on the mountains, but it would be a pain to get there to enjoy it.

I've been in Boston in March when the weather was balmy and beautiful.

I'm not sure you can count on snow much of anywhere then in the east. If I wanted to be pretty sure of snow, I'd head west to the Rockies.

Re: Snow for Spring Break

It seems that I am tainted living in FL, I thought that "up north" always had snow except for a few months. Would the weather be at least cold in TN or NC. I would really like to drive to the mountains, since FL is so flat. I am assuming the mountains will have snow that we can get to and may be go tubing down one day.

Thanks

Re: Snow for Spring Break

My work group took a ski day to the mountains in NH in March. It was raining that day, but there was still a lot of snow on the ground. Depending on how early in March your trip will be, I think you can plan on seeing some snow if you go to the mountains in NH.

You might also hit snow anywhere in the Northeast through March, but for any particular location, it could be hit or miss.

You also need to remember without snow, even if it is cold, there is very little to do -- especially for teenage types who need activity. A lot of the mountain resorts are pretty rural, with few major towns around. You will find this even if you go north as far as northern NH, the Catskills or Adirondacks of New York.

Obviously, my favorite is Stowe, VT or Sugarbush, which is an easy drive into Burlington, VT. Then if the weather does not cooperate, at least you can go to Ben and Jerry's, VT Teddy Bear Factory, ECHO center on Lake Champlain or Church St for funky shopping and people watching.

I was hoping not to have such a long drive, my kids are 5 and 3 so one 10 hour day of driving is about the limit. We have made it as far north as HHI, but that was pushing it with a couple of stops to burn some energy off. Vacations are harder to plan around school. Thanks for your input.

Re: Snow for Spring Break

Don,

We struggle with the same problem in reverse every year. We look for somewhere we can count on to be warm and get tired of going to Florida every year. Even northern Florida can be pretty chilly. You can't count on Hilton Head being warm in March. There just aren't a lot of options if you prefer not to fly (which is expensive with six of us).

I threatened not to go anywhere at all next year for the Spring break.

Don,
Since you live in Tampa, sign up for Southwest Ding and wait for those screaming deals they run. You can fly to Denver or Lake Tahoe via Sothwest and you will get SNOW. In fact with the price of gas, it may not cost you much more to fly. Just a thought and it would be much easier!

Thanks Everyone. We are planning to go to TN, FF moauntains, and if no snow will go to Virginia for a few day and back home. The kids might have to see snow next Christmas.

Just for the record, you aren't much more likely to see snow in Tennessee at Christmas than in the Spring.
