Cork screws in airlines?

I know after 9 -11 they wouldn't let you bring a cork screw in your carry ons, but I thought I heard that that has changed.

What is the rule?

TIA

Nope, my co-worker had one taken from her just this week flying home from LAX to Des Moines.

I was given a list of the new regulations

http://www.tsa.gov/assets/doc/Permit...ited_Facts.doc

And cork screws are OK

The problem with the TSA is that they don't enforce their own rules consistently across the system. They are overly zealous with their shoe removal rules, in addition to what you've seen with corkscrews, small scissors, etc.

The good news is that many decent wines are now screwtop and that is what I buy when we travel.

Re: Cork screws in airlines?

I've had mine taken away on carry-ons. You can put it in luggage that is checked. Clos Pegas is a very fine Chardonnay (20 dollars) that has a screw off cap! Try that.

I agree. Although the guidelines clearly state small scissors are now allowed, I had my manicure scissors confiscated on our return flight. It was really irritating because if I had known I would have packed them in our checked luggage. A fair amount of gentle persuasion didn't work so I gave up -- perhaps carrying a printout of what's allowed from the TSA website might help?

Re: Cork screws in airlines?

You could always get a cork remover that doesn't use a point.

I have one that has a handle with two prongs about three inches long. You sliide the prongs in on two sides of the cork between the cork and the bottle. After the prongs are inserted, you twist the handle and pull up, and the cork comes up at the same time.

This type of remover leaves the cork intack, so you don't have pieces of cork falling into the wine. Doesn't work well with synthetic corks though.

Re: Cork screws in airlines?

OK, so they took my corkscrew!!

They said they didn't care what the website said, they said no corkscrews with any kind of knife. But, They did say that there are new corkscrews which have a different system for cutting thru to the cork. We picked one up but it was $12. No problems on the return flight.

Remeber this is only a problem if it is in your carry-on.

Frankly, I hope they put my plane together with something stronger than cork screws.
