newport to providence what to do

anywhere special to spend a day after picking someone up at Providence airport before heading to West Yarmouth on the cape?

thought spending a day in Providence might be nice but doesn't seem to be a lot to do. 4 adults and 4 20 somthings.

any suggestions?

You could go to Newport, visit a couple of mansions and do Cliff Walk. When you leave the airport take Interstate 95 South. A few miles after you get on 95, the highway splits; take the left hand exit for Route 4 and stay on that (Route 4 becomes Route 1) until you pick up Route 138 East which will take you to Newport via the Jamestown Bridge and the Newport Bridge (toll).
If you want to go to Providence, from the airport take 95 North. There is a nice mall (Providence Place) just in front of the state capital building. There is a Cheese Cake Factory in the mall –Yummmmy!
If the mall & Newport are not on your to-do list, as you enter Providence take 195 East as if you were going to CC. But at Fall River, MA, stop & visit Battleship Cove - home of the Battleship Massachusetts plus some support vessels.
Further east on 195, visit New Bedford, MA, “the whaling city”

I vote for all of those suggestions. Adding....

If your group is into casinos, two of the biggest in the world are less than an hour from PVD - Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods - although they are in the opposite direction from the Cape. Each has great entertainment, shopping, restaurants and, of course, numerous games of chance.

Both also have great discos. The one at Mohegan Sun grudgingly let this 63-year-old and a companion in not long ago.

Re: newport to providence what to do

I second the Battleship Cove suggestion, if people in your party are in good shape as climbing up and down the ladders on the ships requires effort. The USS Mass. (a battleship) is HUGH. There is also a destroyer, submarine, and some kind of German ship. You go through all the ships at your own pace - no guides.
Touring a mansion or too is a nice alternative to Battleship Cove, but may be further out of the way than you wanted to go.
