Best time to book Xmas and Turkey Day Airfares

Need to get my daughter from Milwaukee to Las Vegas from Dec 20-24 for a wedding. Airfares are in the high $300s to low$400s - seems a bit high. But it is around a holiday, should I try to wait for a sale. There are some sales out there now - but Xmas is blocked out.

Also, need Turkey Day from Wash DC to Milwaukee - ouch - they are about $300 - got them last yr for about $200. Any thoughts - I did wait last year until about October to book.

I already booked my Thanksgiving day travel. Got a great rate from AA. Heading west, so will get there in time for turkey dinner. Now with the Alaska pipeline problem, I expect gas prices will continue to rise.

You'll find no sales for Thanksgiving and Christmas. The airlines know they can sell all of their seats, so why offer them at sale prices?

Fares have been escalating rapidly, with another $10-20 fare increase on round trips instituted by most airlines yesterday. As Patri suggests, jet fuel prices - and, thus ticket prices - are sure to go up some more.

I have had my Thanksgiving and Christmas tickets for months and I am very glad I bought them when I did. Prices seem to have skyrocketed since then.

Buy now or risk paying truly outrageous fares as the seats become scarce.

As a side note, UA announced a small fare sale yesterday for tickets purchased by August 18 for travel through November 16. But the sale is primarily for travel on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, has a variety of restrictions and will generally be inapplicable to most leisure travelers who tend to travel on weekends. Other airlines are expected to match, except in markets where there are low-cost airlines.
