Ryanair sale - 1.5 million tickets for 1 penny

These European LCC sales are something else!

Ryanair currently has a sale going on offering 1.5 million seats for 1 penny each plus taxes, with travel from Sept. 18 to Feb. 7 www.ryanair.com

SkyEurope has a sale offering 100,000 seats for 1 pound each plus taxes, for winter travel, and a booking period of Aug. 2-13. www.skyeurope.com

Wizzair also has a sale offering tickets starting at 1 pound plus taxes, with travel from Aug. 21 to Oct. 28 www.wizzair.com

"How a 34¢ ticket adds up to a $70 bill"

Basically, it's all those taxes and fees.
Also an article about "low" fares to Europe. Foreign airlines are allowed to advertise differently than U.S. airlines and actual price differential really isn't all that much, so the article says.

I do agree that the full price should be what is advertised and not the price without taxes and fees. However these LCC bargain fares still represent a good deal in anyone's language.

Airline taxes are a real pain anywhere. I priced a ticket from the US to the Bahamas a few months ago, and almost half the total cost was taxes! Governments are clearly ripping off air travelers. France's Jacques Chirac adding a new tax on international air tickets going through France to pay for social programs is a particularly disgusting example (and one reason I now avoid flying through France).

However, even with taxes these fares are not bad. Earlier this year, I got a ticket to Poland on one of Ryanair's 1 penny sales, and even with taxes and fees, it still only came to a bit over $20. That is still far below what US LCC's charge!

Resorts: Club La Pension, Quarter House, Hotel L'Eau Vive - NOLA, Nob Hill Inn - SF, Allen House - London, Custom House - Boston,
I was looking at flying from London to Prague and then back from Vienna. Problem is, they don't fly from London to Prague, nor back from Vienna. They do have a penny flight from Salzburg into Stansted, which comes to about $35 with taxes. I thought about spending my last day and night in Salzburg and then taking that flight, but then it's about a 2-3 hour shuttle ride to Heathrow, so that uses up most of my day. And, since I would have to fly British Air one way from London to Prague for $73.50 if I did so, it only saves me about $30 on the round trip over what I would just pay to fly British Air on the London-Prague-Vienna-London route, without having to change cities.

But thanks for the heads' up, anyway. It certainly would have been nice if it had worked out.

Don't forget that since 911 anyone on transit through the US even though they do not leave the airport has to pay the airport taxes !!! So it is not just the French who are at it.

As for Ryan Air - they left me stranded at 1am in the morning in Beauvais - their so called Paris airport: it is at least an hour and a half from Paris Gare du Nord - not including any taxi time and fares as well as train fares.

Yes stranded with two young kids, my wife and 6 luggage cases: the best they could do was take us back to Paris - from where we had spent the best part of the afternoon travelling.

So there we were back in Paris at 2am in the morning left to find our own hotel etc.

Cheap . . .perhaps . . . . but also untrustworthy as far as I am concerned.

I would not use them again unless I was flying solo....with LOTS of time on my hands should something happen.

My RyanAir experience was fine. I have used EasyJet more and prefer them, but from Frankfurt Hahn to Gdansk (Danzig) on RyanAir was no problem. There was regular bus service from the Hauptbanhof railway station in Frankfurt to the Hahn airport, that also stopped at the main Frankfurt airport.
In Gdansk, the regular city bus took me from the airport to the downtown train station, from whence there were many buses.

How do you become aware of these? Are you on some email notification?

These sales I happened to see when I was checking LCC websites in planning where I am going this Fall. I have a NW bump voucher I need to use, and quite likely, that might not get me all the way to where I really want to go.

I am on the email list for EasyJet, my favorite European LCC.

Ryanair works just fine, and Frankfurt Hahn is a great place to rent a car!

Just watch flying out of Stansted on a SUNDAY, as British Rail have a habit of track maintenance, and you might have to get into a bus.....
It works but you can lose up to an hour of time.
Once my wife and I (and 12 others) were too late for check in, had to find a hotel nearby...luckily Ryanair did not penalize us and gave us tix for the first flight on Monday!!!
nkosi
p.s. I really appreciate Carolinian's reminders about LCC specials in Europe.
We will be using several of them in Sep/Oct! Thanks!!!!!
