Timeshares/places to stay District of Columbia/Smithsonian Udvar- Hazy?

Looking for recommendations where to stay for a summer vacation in DC.
My family would be touring the various Smithsonian museums in Washington DC on the mall with possibly a one day tour to the Udvar-Hazy facility near Dulles.

Timeshares don't appear promising - all too far away, please confirm?
I see the Fairfield in Alexandria but we are RCI weeks members.

Years ago after a conference I stayed at the Marriott Crystal City for the weekend, this was inexpensive (on the weekend anyway) and convenient since the Metro had a stop right downstairs. I'm thinking this might be worth exploring now too.

Possibilities for DC via timeshares

As you probably know, Fairfield does not deposit many (if any) Alexandria weeks into RCI. You might check to see if any have been deposited in another exchange system or see if a Fairfield owner would rent a week to you.

Fairfield is going to build a new timeshare complex at Washington Harbor. I don't know when it is supposed to be complete.

They aren't close to DC, but if you visit Massanutten or one of the Fairfield's in Williamsburg you can get one or more bus tours of DC. One tour option at Massanutten is to be dropped off at the Smithsonian in the morning and picked up there at the end of the day.

presidential in chancellorsville is closest after alex.

IT is in fredericksburg, va. You can take a train or bus to DC--runs frequently in AM weekdays. About 1.5 hours. But, if you have 3+ people in your car, drive it rush hour in AM and get on HOV-3 lanes about 15 miles up the road from f-burg and go 65 MPH all the way to the pentagon. Evening, I would wait until about 7 PM to head back to f-burg.

THis is not a "close to DC" place--but plenty of folks live there and commute to DC everyday. I commuted to DC a few times while staying there. It is an RCI weeks resort.

We've had good luck with Priceline in Washington--we've gotten the Hyatt on New Jersey Avenue twice for about $70 per night. It's a gigantic impersonal-type hotel (which we like, actually), beautiful rooms, nice location two blocks from Union Station.

There are tips for bidding on betterbidding.com and biddingfortravel.com. Good luck!

Resorts: Port O'Call & Spicebush in Hilton Head and FF Alexandria
There are always a lot of FF Alexandria rentals on ebay...check it out..there
are several there now.
Before we bought at FF Alexandria, we rented there through ebay several
times and were quite pleased. I always tell people to stay in Alexandria even
if they can't get in to FF...Alexandria is a great place to stay, very charming and an easy metro ride to DC. Check hotels.com for some good deals...
Have fun!

Be careful at that Hyatt. Always take a cab at night. The area is generally OK during business hours, but not in the evening. There is a homeless shelter nearby, so there are a lot of bums and mentally ill people hanging around. I went to Georgetown law, which is a couple of blocks away. Three students got mugged last year, one stabbed.
