Question on Marriott usage

Can someone answer this question for me? I am considering purchasing a Maui Ocean Club resale to use EOY. The salesman has told me that I can purchase an annual usage week, deposit one year's usage with Marriott and reserve two weeks for the following year when reservation window opens. I have not heard of that and was wondering if someone can shed some light.

It's possible that I don't understand your question. I'll try. I assume you are contemplating a purchase of an annual-use week instead of purchasing an EOY week.

You can only reserve a week for the year of use.

Thus, for example, if your first year is for 2007, you can reserve your 2007 week 12 months in advance. If, instead of reserving that week to use, you reserve a week and deposit it with II, you can use that deposit to request an exchange back into your resort, but you can't just call up and reserve that week once you have deposited it.

Sometime in 2007, you would reserve your 2008 week 12 months in advance for use in 2008 or to deposit for an exchange request.

Stated another way, if you want to use two full-unit weeks every other year, you could reserve one week (e.g., your 2008 week) but you would have to exchange back into your resort with the other week (e.g., by depositing your 2007 week and requesting an exchange).

That's not something that's a sure thing.

If you have a lockoff week, you can divide it into two pieces and reserve two separate weeks, one week for the 1BR part and one week for the studio part. You can do that 12 months in advance of the week you want. Then you can choose to occupy both weeks, deposit one and occupy one or deposit both of them for exchanges.

If that isn't responsive to your question, please clarify what you seek.

No you cannot do that. You can deposit one week and then, request that week next year through interval international (an exchange company). You cannot bank your weeks like that through Marriott. However, there is no guarantee that interval international can fill your request. If you need two weeks every other year, I'd buy the two weeks eoy.

Thanks for info. What he was saying did not sound right to me, but i thought I would ask the experts.

This may become a feature of MVCI's new internal exchange system, so don't discount the possibility. Under current protocol, it's a bit more complicated than the saleperson explained, as noted.

If you want 2 weeks every other year, IMO, it would be a good idea to buy 2 EOY intervals (even or odd). This presumes you love Hawaii and want to go there every other year, as MF's (and re taxes I'm hearing now) are high and climbing. On the odd year you don't wish to go in your assigned year, you can always deposit the intervals (currently) with II and trade back into the resort in the alternative year. So, say you have odd EOY and have just made your reservations for 2007, but wish to go this year (2006). You can deposit (or request-first) into II and request specific weeks in 2006 at your resort. You have internal trade preference along with Marriott preference, so the likelihood is high that your request will be granted. Exchanging has fees attached, both for membership and each transaction.

Hope that helps!

Pat

Interesting- they are using that same sales pitch in Ko'Olina; they make it sound like it is a given to get 2 2 BR's on alterante years and get a bonus week for $199 the year you don't use the Hawaii week. I am glad I found this board to realize that it was a good sales pitch and, while theoretically possible, isn't nearly as guaranteed as they implied.

Perhaps he was eluding to the fact that this property almost always secures an AC with II?

So with a Maui deposit into interval you would be able to use the depositied week, plus you would likely get a bonus week for the exchange as most Hawaii Marriotts do.

A different approach to getting 2 weeks in one year, every year, is to buy a 2 BDRM, LO and and reserve back to back weeks. I did this for next Feb, and it worked out fine. So for one maintenance and the split fee($1400+), you can get 2 weeks in one year. That's a great deal!!

Regards.
