Cold calls from rental/sale companies?

We own at Waiohai, and have now for four years. I have to give you a little background for this question, so bear with me.

Just prior to buying at Waiohai, we purchased and then rescinded at Westin Ka'anapali. Since then, for the past four years, we have received a call every week (I'm not exaggerating) from some resale/rental companies wanting to know if we want to sell or rent our Westin Ka'anapali unit.

Obviously they gave my name and number out before we rescinded, and I have called and called to ask Westin to please REMOVE my name from their list of owners, and they assure me that I am not on the list. Today I received yet another call regarding my Ka'anapali unit that I don't own, which is making this person who is usually calm and happy ready for anger management classes. :wall:  It is to the point where it is really upsetting me week after week because the calls are so frequent.

So here's my question related to Marriott and why I posted this here-does Marriott do this as well? I have NEVER received a call related to my Marriott timeshare from some other company. If they don't sell or give our names to other companies, then I applaud them.

If I ever had a thought of buying from Westin, they have bothered me to the point where I will never give them my business. I hope Marriott doesn't practice this.

I'm interested to hear if anyone gets calls for their Marriott units or knows if Marriott does this. Maybe there is a privacy clause that one can put in the paperwork when closing a unit???

Also, if anyone has any suggestions as to how to stop the harassing phone calls, I'm all ears, though I realize this probably better answered on another board.

Interestingly enough, I never get phone calls about my Marriott units. However, I've gotten mailers; for example, a postcard from a Tahoe-based reseller for my Marriott TL property.

For my Westin property, I get probably 2-3 calls a week. I just let it go to VM and delete. :)

Trust me, I know there are more pressing issues in life than being annoyed with phone calls. But they call our business line, which I cannot ignore, and disguise their caller ID. Since many businesses that call us don't have recognizable caller ID, I need to answer all calls. So I'm routinely bothered by these people.

List your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry

In the meantime tell the callers to place your number on their do not call list.

I think a while back somebody on the Hotel board said that a Westin employee got caught selling numbers. I swear we get calls all the time too. However, I don't know if they are for Westin or Marriott because they never tell me. I just got a message today that said, "Please call me back between the hours of 8 and 5 pm, it is urgent!" Yeah right. I have no problem hanging up on people once I figure out who they are. GL...

I would add to JimC's comments . . . next time the telemarketers call, tell them you are on the "Do Not Call" list and they are not allowed to call you. Ask for their name and number so that you can report their violation . . . that should stop the calls real quick! There are hugh fines for any infractions.

Also, I believe in addition to the National Do Not Call List, there is a state list. At least I know there is one in PA. There is some differences in the rule and regs of these two lists, but I cannot remember exactly the difference.

You will need to renew you numbers every five years.

Here's a plan

I think you should agree to sell them the week you do not own. Let them go down this path, generate paper and enthusiasm, telling them only when you absolutely have to, "oh you mean I have to own a week to sell it to you? I didn't know that. I've told you over a hundred times I don't own one, so I thought you wanted to pay me for it anyway." Do this two or three times and I'll bet you get off that list. On another one, maybe, but off that one....

Thank you so much for all of your replies. I love your suggestion Dave! I'm going to try that.

I feel much better just venting! :D
