See my Tahoe page at www.freewebs.com/denisetravels for lots of ideas. Note that you can get very cold weather in October at that elevation, even snow, so pack accordingly. We were in the Sierra's this last weekend and it was in the 20's at night, 70's during the day.

...SNOW IN THE SIERRA LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING..

A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL REMAIN NEAR THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA
COAST THROUGH THURSDAY. A BAND OF MOISTURE WRAPPING AROUND THIS
LOW WILL SPREAD RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW INTO THE SIERRA LATE
TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING.

SNOW LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO DROP TO AROUND 6500 FEET NORTH OF HIGHWAY
50 AND DOWN TO 7000 FEET IN MONO COUNTY BY EARLY THURSDAY MORNING.
UP TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE ABOVE 8000 FEET...WITH 2
TO 4 INCHES BETWEEN 7000 AND 8000 FEET IN THE LAKE TAHOE BASIN
AND ABOVE 7500 FEET IN MONO COUNTY FROM HIGHWAY 395 WESTWARD. AT
LAKE LEVEL...SNOW MAY MIX WITH RAIN EARLY THURSDAY MORNING BUT NO
ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.

WHILE ROAD SURFACES ON WELL TRAVELED MOUNTAIN PASSES ARE LIKELY
TO BE WET THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING...SOME SLUSHY ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE
POSSIBLE DURING PERIODS OF HEAVIER SNOW. LESS TRAVELLED PASSES ALONG
THE SIERRA CREST ABOVE 8000 FEET MAY BECOME SLIPPERY AND SNOW
COVERED. PEOPLE PLANNING TRAVEL IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS LATE
TONIGHT OR EARLY THURSDAY SHOULD CARRY CHAINS AND STAY TUNED FOR
THE LATEST INFORMATION ON THIS EARLY SEASON SNOWFALL.
