Question Singapore Airlines seating -- is this true? grrrrr!

Is it true if you have economy ticket reservations that you cannot reserve seating with your spouse until very close to departure date?

Did I understand the information incorrectly? Other than paying for first class is there a way around this Thank you for any help in advance.

Not true.

I'm looking at my ticket confirmation for a coach ticket in December on SQ.

Singapore-Penang 12/23/06 SQ 192 Seat 33D
Penang-Singapore 12/25/06 SQ 197 Seat 33D

When did I reserve the seats? On the same day I booked the ticket - May 20, 2006! That's seven months in advance!

Dave, you're Star Alliance Gold, right? The rules may be different for *Gold members.

Cathy, did you get your information from the airline?

Several years ago, I had a paid one-way ticket from Singapore to Bangkok on SQ, and I tried to get a seat assignment ahead of time. I was told I had a guaranteed window or aisle seat (I don't recall which I asked for), but the seat assignment would be issued at the airport. I think I ended up upgrading to business for cash at the airport.

I don't know what they do today. If your tickets are issued together on the same record, they should be pretty good about getting you seats together. Just get to the airport early.

David: Yes Singapore Airlines agent. We noticed our itinerary said seats unassigned, called them to get the assignment and was told we couldn't do it so soon. What is it that Dave M. has that we don't and can we get it? I did sign us up on their program Krisflyer, does that help at all?

This is the lowest level of *G status available on UA, which I currently have.

Dave also may have status with KrisFlyer as he flies intra-Asia. In any event, short of phone check-in, elite status is the only way I know of to get advance seat assignments on SQ. Dave flies over 100K miles a year on airplanes so he deserves what he gets

Editing to add seating info from FlyerTalk. Things have changed somewhat so my above assertion is out of date....

It's a secret!

Oh, you meant in regards to flying. Dave is a 1 K (highest status) on UA which gives him Gold on *Alliance. The other Pat (I think) and I are 1P (2nd highest status) which also gives us Gold status. We all do a lot of flying, sometimes just for no reason other than to get miles.

Pat, I'm going to make 1K for the first time this year.

Congrats!

I'll make 1K lite. I will also be one of the few out there who will make 1K this year almost entirely on mileage runs. Other than one revenue trip to Japan to take advantage of the Expedia Hilton 2.00/nt hotel mistake, all my revenue travel this year will be mileage runs. Of course, there's also non-revenue travel

Safe travels!

What I "have" is a ticket that I booked on SQ's website. Thus, as indicated in Pat's link (post #5), I was able to reserve seats as part of the booking process. Thus, status didn't enter into it this time.

I just knew you had "something" that was different.
