Rental agency calls to ask "Where is the Car?"

Has anyone ever experienced having a car rental company call to ask where the car is? On Sunday, U-Save in Myrtle Bach, SC, called to ask this as the next party to use the car was standing at the counter.

When I made the reservation, I had said that I would return the car at 11:30 am. Due to bad weather when I was flying in, I did not pick the car up until almost 1:30 pm. On Sunday, when I had checked out of my T/S, I decided to do some sightseeing as I figured I did not have to get the car back until 1:30 (I was trying to get my full 7 days of use and there was no sense in waiting around the airport any more than absolutely necessary.) Anyways, at 11:40 am, I get a call asking where the car was as the next party was waiting for it.

Has this happened to anyone else?

No, but then again I've always returned the car earlier than I said, or I've called if I needed to extend the rental or make changes. A couple of times I've been the one waiting for a car to be returned. Not fun.

Did the rental company charge you extra when you returned it?

The problem is, you told them what time to expect the car returned. They planned on that car to BE returned at the time you said. They have absolutely no idea you picked it up late, nor do they care. What they care about is you said you would have it back at that time.

They rented it to someone else. And it sure wasn't their fault your flight was late, either.

So what happened after that? Did you return it right away? Did they charge you extra? What?

The contract said the car was due back at 1:25 pm and I got it back by 12:15. So, I got it back an hour before the contract said it was due. Thus, I did not have to pay extra. The only place 11:30 shows up is on the internet reservation. The car was not a specialty car, just a Chevy Aveo. It would be different if it had been a covertible or van that was a special vehicle.

Going to MB this weekend, staying a week, do you mind telling me what you paid for the week?

Their website isn't giving me a quote, just telling me to call.

I never realized the time on the contract would be different than the time on the internet reservation. I always just assumed (and you know what they say about assuming... ) that you had to go by the internet time.

Good to know.

Most of the time the contract will automatically have the return time exactly the same as the actual pickup time (not the internet reservation time). I always look. Once or twice (out of many car rentals over the years), when picking up a car an hour or two late, I have had to ask that this be done.

I've rented cars 4 or 5 times a year for over 25 years, from numerous companies in a few different countries, and have never had anytime entered on the contract other than the actual time of pickup, whether early, on time, or late.

I can imagine showing up fairly late for pickup and being told the car is gone, rented to someone else, (a concern when you snag a great internet rate and might have to then rent anew at a higher rate) but that has not happened.

I would say that whoever called you about the car was new or poorly trained and just looked online at your file, consulting the original booking rather than the actual contract. With a strong job market, it seems that more and more service staff are "green."
