Best time to go to Lake Tahoe area - Timeshare Users Group Online Community Forums

We have our timeshare in North Lake Tahoe for years. We have never used it. I would however like to plan our winter vacation for 2007. What time of year would you say is the best time to go there.

Assuming you own a floating week timeshare for which you have to make a reservation, you're probably too late in making a prime reservation for this coming winter. Many people make reservations for the best weeks in the first minutes of the very first day the resort allows reservations, often a full year in advance. The best weeks get reserved leaving the less popular weeks for those that have not planned ahead.

However, if you have a lucky charm, go for any week in ski season, especially January or February. Even if you aren't skiers, there are other winter activities that you can enjoy.

Start by calling the resort to find out what's available. If you can't get a decent week, aks what your options are for 2007 and be sure to start planning now for 2008! Find out how early you are permitted to reserve your week and whether you have to pay maintenance fees in advance to reserve for 2008. Then call early!

We aren't skiiers, so I think the best time is the summer, although we usually go up in the spring and fall also. In the summer there is so much to do outside and of course the gambling, shows, sightseeing, etc. In the winter they sometimes get tons of snow, so if you aren't a skiier, it can really limit what you can do. The roads sometimes close for 1/2 a day or overnight in the winter as well, and we've been stuck up there twice. Once we were stuck overnight on the pass (Hwy. 80) because the CHP closed the road and we had to sleep in our car until they got the roads cleared about dawn, and once we were stuck in Truckee for 4 days (but we were staying there, so it wasn't a problem.)

Fall and spring can also be beautiful in Tahoe. We were just up there this past weekend and it was in the 70's during the day and down in the 20's at night. However, we always go the last weekend in Oct. and more often than not, it has snowed. This year was unseasonably warm for Oct. We were also up there the first weekend in June and it snowed - twice!

Wow, thank you DaveM and DeniseM for your quick replies. Dave I'll take your advise and call the resort now and Denise, your website is so kewl. Alot of information. You made me excited to go back after all this time. I have forgotten how beautiful Lake Tahoe area is.

Are you a skier? If so, Jan through mid March will be the best. My kids will only go to Lake Tahoe in winter becuase both are avid skier/snowboarder. I, on the other hand, love the summer/fall season at Tahoe. So, we generally go to Tahoe for Christmas/New Year/President's week for a week as a family, then I'll go up there a few days in summer/early fall wtih my girlfriends.

It depends a lot on what you want to do, or not...

We're usually at Tahoe for Thanksgiving and then either in the summer, Easter, or Christmas.
Each is different and unique. And it is unpredictable.
Love them all.
December 03 were snowed in for 3 days.

Thanksgiving there was no snow and was like spring. Put a turkey in the over on Thanksgiving day and went 4-wheeling.

Easter was spring like then we had 2 feet of snow.

We like mid summer and early fall (September). We were on the North Shore last Christmas week and the snow wasn't enough for good skiing and it was warm. The year before they had record snow falls.
