MOMA is at 53rd b/t 5th and 6th, the Met Opera is at Lincoln Center, 66th and Broadway. It is a healthy walk, but easily doable on a nice day. A taxi is easy if it's not around rush hour.

What route would you suggest? Can she cut through Central Park? What would be the safest route? Any rough estimate on the cost of a taxi from one to the other? Thank you for the info. She is going tomorrow and we have not had a lot of time to help her out with this.

No need to cut through the park. She should leave the museum and walk west (make a right upon exiting onto 53rd street) a couple of blocks to Broadway, then north (another right) up to Lincoln Center. It will be on the left. She will have to navigate the circle at 59th street, she should stay to the left and walk by the new Time Warner Center, then continue up Broadway. When she gets to Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera Building is the one in the center. A taxi shouldn't be more than 5 dollars or so on the meter.

eta: I just checked the Opera schedule. If she is going tomorrow, she is either seeing Tosca (matinee), my favorite opera of all, or Madama Butterfly (evening performance), on my 'must see' list for this season. Either way, I am jealous!!!!

It is VERY easy to get a taxi directly in front of the Met Museum to take you to the Opera House which is across town and about 1 mile to the south. Ride would be about $6-8 is my estimate.

The yellow cabs are right there at the curb in front of the museum.

Make a fun first ride as they will cut across Central Park on the way.

OMG I just reread your OP, Denise, my directions were from the Museum of Modern Art, NOT the Metropolitan at 5th avenue in the 80s. Yes, she should just take a taxi down and through the park to Lincoln Center, please ignore my previous posts!!!!

NY City Best Route???

What would be the "easiest" route for a teen to get from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to the Metrop. Opera House??? Would it be easier from the Rockefeller Center.? She is going up to NY on bus trip and has no experience using a train/bus/cab and will probably be on foot...and alone to boot. Any suggestions would be appreciated and Thank you. Worried Aunt

What fun reading this thread out of order

NYC has one of the worlds best public transportation system, and I recommend using it.

She can take the #79 bus from the NE corner of 79th St and 5th Ave, across the park and get off at Columbus Ave and transfer to the #11 bus or #7 bus on Columbus, and get off anywhere around 64th - 65th Street. If she catches the #11, there should be a stop right in front of Lincoln Center, but either one works. On the map, it looks like the #7 goes down Broadway where Columbus and Broadway intersect, which is where Lincoln Center is, so she can get off right after Columbus and Broadway and walk a very very short block West.

If she has a prepaid metro card (for use on all subways and buses) the transfer will be free when she uses her metro card on both buses. If she pays cash on the bus (coins only) she should ask the driver for a transfer and use the transfer on the 2nd bus.

Here's a page that has a link to the Manhattan Bus map.
http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/maps/index.html

Most NYC bus drivers are helpful and friendly, so she can ask for help if she needs it on the bus. The bus stops are all well marked with the bus numbers that stop there.

Lets see .. from Rockefeller Center she can take the uptown B or D train 2 stops to Columbus Circle and walk up Broadway a few blocks from there. Or, if it's not a nice day, she can transfer to the uptown #1 train at Columbus Circle and get off at the first stop, which is Lincoln Center. The transfer isn't that hard .. you just follow the signs marked uptown 1 (the "1" will be in big red circle).

How It Finally Went Down

First, thank you everyone for your help. It's what I like best about TUG !!
My niece met a fellow student who also had a ticket for Tosca at the Met (it was a U of Dela. sponsored bus trip to NY). The new friend had a friend who lives in NY who met them at Rockefeller Center, took them to the Museum of Modern Art and put them in a taxi to the Met. She loved Tosca and is planning her next visit to the Big City. Again, thank you.
