Read the tag

I always buy washable comforters because my dogs share our bed. If it's too bulky for your washer, go to a laundromat. I need to take my king size comforters there - particularly if they are especially thick. But you must read the label to see their recommendations.

I usually dry outside in the sun. Because they don't work well on the line, I drape them over the fence. They dry very quickly for me that way. I don't have down comforters, but with a down coat that I have, I fluff it in the dryer with a clean tennis shoe - or you can use a couple of clean tennis balls.

Good luck.

be careful....

I washed one in the washing machine and it exploded. What an awful mess--feathers everywhere. Next time I will take them to the cleaners.

I have a similar question. My comforter says "Dry Clean only". It's not down. Can I wash it instead? It's a major pain to dry clean....

I wash my down comforters and jackets in the washing machine. I use "down wash" liquid soap. The difficulty with washing down is the drying. It takes a long time and is best done on the "low" dryer setting. I have rubber rings to put into the dryer that beat on the comforter/jacket as it dries so that it will puff up evenly and not dry in clumps. You can use clean tennis shoes for this purpose instead.

The critical thing in washing down is the size of your dryer. I have twin comforters that I wash and dry seperately. A queen comforter might be too large to dry properly in a standard sized dryer.

Hi Spike,
Manufacturers are only required to specify ONE way to clean an item. Unless I know it will be ruined by washing, I will sometimes take a chance. It depends on how upset you will be if it's ruined. :)

Between- expensive "dry cleaning" - to "freshen" a comforter- or other items that recommend dry cleaning- I have used the "dryel" method- they are chemically treated sheets- that you put in the dryer with the comforter (or anything else that needs dry cleaning)- It does not replace completely a trip to the dry cleaner- but gives it a little more time. rlb

I just washed my king size down comforter at the laundromat last week and it said "dry clean only"

all turned out fine. I dried it for 30 minutes there and then hung it up to dry on the 2nd floor railing of our foyer.

I have a king size which I used to have dry cleaned but now have the cleaners wash it. It comes out just fine...the drying process is the key. It has to be done on low heat with the tennis balls. It does take awhile so bring a good book if you are going to do it yourself...
Stay warm....

we have done both down comforters and sleeping bags at laundromats with good results. make sure there are no tears or near-tears in them before you do it; use the proper soap or detergent; use the largest front-load washer you can find. when it's done, don't dry it, take it home and hang it out to dry (might take a day). -ken

Me, too.

I've been reading this topic on New Posts for 3 days and I've been thinking, "If it takes a sip of water to wash down a pill, and a cold Bud Light to wash down a plate of ribs, what might it take to wash down a comforter!?"
