NY Broadway Shows Recommendations

We will be at the MC Mar 9-13th of 07. I will be traveling with my two daughters ages 14 and 9. We would like to see Wicked, but the cheapest tickets that I can find are going for $110.00 each. I guess since this is such a hot show, there are no discounts available at the present time. Can anyone recommend any other shows that we might enjoy? I have read that a lot of people just show up the day of the show for discounted tickets? Is it worth my sanity to do this? I like having things planned waaaay in advance. Oh, I might add that this will be our first broadway show. Thanks.

For years I took 15-20 high school kids into the city for 3 days around this time and we have always gotten great prices during the week on ticketmaster.com for Disney productions like Lion King, Aida and Beauty and the Beast. I am talking $30-50 per ticket. I am not a stand in line kind of gal so that never appealed, especially during winter. Once we saw Rent for $20 and 42nd street for $30. Go the middle of the week for the best prices; I think that mid week winter is low season. I stopped going 3 years ago when war broke out and we bombed Saddam Hussein. It was too scary with all the protests etc. that week and all the craziness. And me with other people's kids to care for. That did it! I was a nervous wreck. Have fun.

Right now Ticketmaster has tix for Lion King for $51 Beauty and the Beast $40 and Hairspray $20 and Wicked $50. these are likely rear mez but you can see the seating chart before you buy. I almost think these others would be better than Wicked. It is a little sophisticated and a bit dark. The writing is snappy and clever but it has pretty mature themes- it was also a terrific show and my favorite. But, the first three are fantastic for your kids' ages.

My wife and I saw Wicked in Philadelphia and it was fabulous, but for your children's ages we would hihgly recommend Lion King. We took our 8 year old granddaughter to Broadway for Lion King this past August and it was probably the best we have ever seen.

Hairspray might be a good alternative. You can buy discounted tickets ahead of time or get half price tickets from the ticket booth. If you only do one show and can swing the price I'd stick with Wicked.

Actually anything you see will be fun. The whole experience of going to a "Broadway show" if you've never gone before is wonderful. We took our dds to NYC a couple of summers ago and saw "Lion King" and "Fiddler on the Roof". They loved both of them. They've also seen "Chorus Line", "Wicked" and "Phantom of the Opera" in San Francisco. They were both pretty young when they saw "Phantom" and they loved it.

My 16 year old loved "Mamma Mia". The subject matter might be something you don't want to get into with your kids, but the music and show should be fun.

Ken,

Thanks for posting those links. I found them earlier using the search method, and I used them to check ticket prices.

Tuggers,

Thanks for posting comments and recommendations. I originally condidered Lion King, but we have watched that movie a hundred different times!! We also saw the little mini performance at Busch Gardens. I know none of that compares to a broadway performance, but I thought we would not enjoy it because we were already familiar with the theme, etc. Because of your great suggestions, I think we may try to see Lion King and maybe Beauty and the Beast. The tickets appear to be very reasonable. I will go online later and search for tickets. Any preference for good seats? Thanks again for all your comments. We have a countdown until March. My birthday also happens to be that weekend, so it will really be a very memorable vacation.

We saw "Lion King" because the dds wanted to see it. Dh and I really didn't care as we had seen the movie (and video) more times than we could remember. A friend said it was "different" seeing it live. I agree that the staging and costumes are wonderful. But the music is the same, just as it is for "Beauty and the Beast". I think my dds enjoyed "Fiddler on the Roof" as much, if not more, because it was entirely new to them.

We had orchestra seats on the aisle for "Lion King". I would recommend being close for this show so you can see the costumes. Also, the characters enter through the audience, so it's fun to be on the orchestra level. Usually I like to sit in the mezzanine for most shows so that I can have a better overall view.

I saw Wicked in NYC this past september and it was great!!! I think the ages of your children would be good for this play. I had bought my tickets 7 months in advance, but the folks sitting next to me got same day tickets at the theater in the morning by lottery. They paid $25 per seat and I paid $80 per seat. But, availability and lottery is a gamble.

Good luck.

My all time favorite. We saw it in San Francisco and my dds both loved it as well.
