Rt 95 N/S tight squeeze -heavy traffic- Think Thanksgiving
We just returned from Alexandria, VA to NJ and followed Rt 95 rather than our usual 50/301/ Del Rt one expressway.
Going N just after we paid the toll going onto Delaware, Rt 95 has 4 lanes of traffic blocked (2 N & 2 S ) and it doesn't look like they could be completed by Wednesday or next Sunday. (Thanksgiving Traffic) We were driving N at about 1 PM this afternoon ( traffic was not heavy until this blockage) It delayed us about 30 minutes....not no heavy traffic. I would consider an alternate route as the holiday approaches, if you need to go between NYC to DC. Also, usually, the NJ Turnpike is a total mess....so consider Rt 95 in Philly or Rt 295 just S of Trenton. Might even consider GSP S to Ferry and cut back N to Bay Bridge (Rt 50 W ) through Annpolis. Going S toward DC....I would exit 95 in Del at exit 4 which is Del Rt One expressway (EZPass $1.00) exit at Middletown/ Odessa, and head toward Middletown to Rt 301 S (right past the RR tracks near the WaWa). Get on 301 to MD and continue until it combines with Rt 50 W just before the Annapolis Bay Bridge and then decide to use 495 Beltway, say on 50 to 295 S or ( up to hoe far south you are going) stay on rt 301 S toward Richmond. Any ideas for more help (aside from taking Amtrak?) |

Around the holidays the Amtrak or flying is a great alternative for the Northeast corridor. Especially with gas prices again rising.
I booked a roundtrip on Continental (Newark - Reagan National - nonstops) through Expedia for 12/23, returning 12/24 with an overnight stay at the Hyatt Regency Bathesda (nicest hotel in Bethesda - at a Metro stop) for a package total of $228 with taxes!!! Additional persons in same room at $149 for airfare only, Beats driving 10-12 hours roundtrip to see the inlaws ![]() |
