Do you mean the best course for condition, challenge, etc. or the best value? There are a lot of courses to choose from and they vary a fair bit in cost, etc. There are golf desks online to help you choose, and many resorts offer some sort of discount at particular courses.

We own a home just outside Hilton Head, and have been travelling and golfing there for 30 years. Here is my top 10 list, without regards to cost.

1. Harbour Town Golf Links
2. Daufuskie Island Club- Melrose Course
3. Daufuskie Island Club- Bloody Point
4. Hidden Cypress at Sun City
5. Crescent Pointe Golf club
6. Sea Pines Ocean Course
7. Palmetto Hall- Arthur Hills Course
8. Palmetto Hall-Bob Cupp Course
9. Palmetto Dunes-Arthur Hills Course
10. Golden Bear at Indigo Run

Everybody will have opinions on this. I hope this helps you at least start the process. BTW-Harbour Town is about $220 for 18 holes in the spring. The rest of the courses are $85-100 per round that time of year.

Remember, Melrose and Bloody Point are on Daufuskie Island, a 45 minute ferry ride(the ferry ride is entertaining, and the golf courses are top notch)
Also, I didn't include Hampton Hall in the list of top courses. It WAS private, but now can be accessed through purchase of ClubKey.
E-mail me privately. I have some information about playing two excellent private golf courses just off island. Jack

Thumbs up

http://www.clubkey.com/whatis.html

This is what I found when I looked it up. I haven't read all the restrictions etc.

Last Minute Tee Times worked out well for DH. I'll look for the phone number and post it.

Clubkey is a golf discount company that has a book available for purchase for $49. This book entitles one person to the discounts listed in the book for many courses across the country, depending upon the time of year. The Hilton Head Island area lists over 20 golf courses available through Clubkey.
The book can be purchased on-line, or at retail golf stores listed on their website. A golf retail store on Hilton Head sells the book.

In my experience, depending on the time of the year, the discounts offered by Clubkey for the Hilton Head Island area are excellent. I know Clubkey has added Hampton Hall GC to its Hilton Head listing. This course is new, and WAS private. They also relisted Palmetto Hall's 36 holes, after they renovated all their greens, and still list my favorites, Melrose and Bloody Point on Daufuskie Island. The key is(no pun intended) to purchase the book only if discounts exist for the time of year you are vacationing. Check on-line to make that judgement before you purchase the book.

I have travelled to Hilton Head for 30 years, and now own a home just outside Hilton Head. The local paper you mentioned is the Island Packet.

We visited the Marriott Heritage Club in January 2006, where golf was included.

We played at the Sea Pines Ocean & Sea Marsh, and thought both were very nice. They have a golf packet you can buy, which gives you play at many local courses.

We had one round at Harbour Town, and I was not impressed at all. It didn't look like it was kept up, and they have cart path only rules all year round. Definitely not worth paying over $200+ for a round.

While at Harbour Town one evening for dinner, it rained. The roof leaked, and they had to put buckets all over. They were even removing pictures from the walls, to avoid them getting ruined. It was all very shocking, for what I thought was a upscale place.
