Exchanging an Exchange

I've been researching this question and think I have the answer, but want to make sure. If one accepts an exchange through II and later discovers that a new and better week is available, how do you go about making a swap and what is the cost?

By reading as much as I can, it appears that you must relinquish the week you have, pay another $89 fee, and pick up the new week. Is that accurate?

In other words, suppose that I am trying to swap into Hawaii. I accept a lock off that will accommodate my family (4). However, later I find a 1 bedroom or even a 2 bedroom are available (these would have to be during flexchange). Can I switch to the newly available 1 or 2 bedroom for $89?

A related question is that many of the lockoffs in Hawaii say that they only hold 2 people (privately or not) on the II website. Yet, I know that the Maui Marriott lock off has beds for 4 (albeit in one room). Do the II numbers have any meaning regarding how many people are allowed into the room?

Maui Marriott Ocean Club, Guest Suite, has one bed with fold-out sofa.
(The Guest lock-off is always part of a 2 bedroom Villa).
Maybe they exist with 2 beds, but we've never seen one.
Ko'Olina and Kauai Beach Club Guest lock-offs are really suitable for two adults. Maybe a young child or two also, on the fold-out sofa.
Waiohai has 2 full bedrooms only. No lock-offs.

You are correct about how you would go about retrading (the term II uses) for the larger unit. You need to call II to do this since you can't do it on line. I've done this three times and it's a great way to lock in your vacation for purposes of airfare, etc. If something better comes up it only costs you another exchange fee.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't mean that the Maui lockoff had two "beds." I meant that it could hold 4 people in the 1 bed and 1 pull out sofa. I just toured Maui again last week and it seems to me that a Maui lockoff is no worse than a normal hotel room (that is what they started life as after all) and in some ways they are better than a normal hotel room (refrigerator, microwave, toaster, etc.). I suppose the comfort of a pull out sofa may be lease comfortable than a normal bed. But, I would only put my children in the pull out sofa so that might be OK.

sd,
Last month we were in a lock-off for one week (7109). It's actually quite large, but it was up front, (OF) inside corner villa. Quite comfortable.

So, if you want to retrade an exchange, is that correct that you have to wait until 60 days out during flex time or can you call Interval ahead of time and make the request and wait until it becomes available.? Or, do you wait until 60 days out, and then call Interval? Thanks

You cant put in a request to retrade an exchange. You will have to find a unit available for instant confirmation then call II and ask to cancel the first exchange and then exchange into the new unit.

gmarine's comments are correct.

To add, it has absolutely nothing to do with flexchange. You can do a re-trade any time you want up until 24 hours before check in.

If you cancel an exchange and book another unit you don't get the $89 Marriott to Marriott exchange fee. They will charge you the $135 fee because you have lost the Marriott rate once you cancel.
Definitely worth $135 if you can upgrade to a bigger unit!

You still only pay $89 for a re-trade. The $135 only applies when you cancel. I completely agree that it's worth the extra money to get what you want.
