spring skiing at Smuggs

Spring break is late this year (3/31-4/8/07). Does anyone have info about skiing at Smuggs that time of year. I called them and of course they say they have it, though not all slopes are open. The lift fees are still full price. What can you tell me about your experiences?

Good April skiing in the northeast is a fluke. It happens, but not most winters. Go west.

We've been to Smuggs once in 2005 during the last week of March/first week of April. It was the first year of our kids' new winter break time.

There was plenty of snow. Out of the six days that we were there, we generally got one or two days of good skiing, a couple of days of drizzle and slushy snow and a couple of days of heavy rain. All days were skiable. However, how much you will enjoy the skiing depends on how much of a diehard skier you are. I felt quite guilty about sending my six year old off to ski camp in a rain poncho. It's hard to ski in those things - you can't see your arms.

After that experience, we decided we'd go to Orlando during that time of year.

We were in Killington last year the last weekend in March. Conditions were awful (mashed potatoes), both my kids got hurt. Smuggs is further north, but it's a crapshoot. We're heading to North Lake Tahoe this year.

The Smuggs locals have said that April is the month they prefer - they can ski without all the heavy gear to keep them warm - something about skiing in shirt sleeves. I'm not sure if this was just hype, and I really think it would be a crap shoot, good some years, not some others.
If it were me, I"d think of booking last minute and see what the conditions are just before you want to go.

If you look for alternate locations, just keep in mind that is Easter Week, and Disney rates it one of their top 3 weeks for visitors (ie loooong lines)

From my experience in the White Mountains of NH I prefer not to ski any later than mid March as the conditions get slushy and spotty. A lot of the trails close after this time. I prefer crisp snow to the slippery slush. Good Luck. I believe that the elevation is higher at Smuggs but the winters seem so iffy anymore with the snowfall amounts.
