I have a 2 bedroom unit for mid April '08 on hold till 6:00PM Sunday 12/16. It is a Friday check in, so it is not oceanfront. Does anyone know whether it is worth locking in so far in advance? I have no idea how easy/hard it is to get into oceanfront resorts in NC in April. I am using a Smuggs 3 bedroom, white week that dies April '08.

Hi,
As a fellow Smuggs owner, I think you can do better. We traded into this resort 2 Aprils ago for our kids' school vacation--also a Friday check-in. We did get one day on the beach, but the weather is so iffy at that time of year. It was actually in the low 40s with a howling nor'easter when we arrived! If you can't do the beach, there is not much else going on at this resort although there are some nice things to do in the area and I'm sure it's hard to beat in July. Personally, and some may disagree, I think you can get more bang for that 3 bedroom Smuggs white week. I'd choose Williamsburg, Massanutten or Orlando just to name a few. We also had a really great time at the Fairfield Nashville one April that we got last minute with a Smuggs white week. Good luck--we find April a challenging time to exchange, especially since flying is not usually in the budget. We need to be within driving distance of the Northeast, and it's just not a great season.

Are you going to OBX to fish or to golf? There are some great golf courses and charter fishing headboats on the islands. Personally, I do not like Outer Banks Beach Club II.

Thanks for the advise. RCI extended my hold till midnight tomorrow, so I have a little more time to think this through. My April school vacation will be the only time that we can travel in '08 except for our week 52 at Smuggs. We have to drive and would like our older daughter who is in school in Charlottesville, VA to be able to join us for the weekend, so we thought that Outer Banks would be a good choice. We've been to Williamsburg and airfare just isn't in the budget, so further South is not an option.

Consider Massanutten, then. Activities do get expensive, but at least you have the option of doing them--not the case at OBBC. We've actually traded back into Smuggs for April vacation this year. I'm sick of the kids telling me that none of the other resorts measure up. I warned them it will be deader than dead, but they insist they want to be able to explore the surrounding area more than they do in the summer as they don't like to ever miss camp. And there's always the microscopic chance there will still be snow for skiing. I've voiced the suggestion several times that Smuggs have more stuff up and running that time of year, but I guess school spring breaks vary so much, it's almost impossible. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
