Soon we are going to start organising a two week trip to Mexico from the UK. As we have never been to Mexico we are thinking of spending one week in Cancun and the other in Puerto Vallarta. Is there significant difference in these two resort destinations to make a two centre trip worthwhile?

Thanks in anticipation of any advice given.

There are differences, but not necessarily major ones depending on your taste and interests. PV has more colonial history, local flavor as an old fishing village, and physical beauty with the mountains. Cancun has better water, esp. for scuba., and the Mayan sites nearby. I would think a week in each would make a great trip.

I agree. Both have their unique charms. While I believe there is more to do in PV you cannot compare the beaches and water in Cancun with PV.

I am sure that someone else will know the answer, but I would check how easy it will be to get between the two centres. I had hoped to do a week in Acapulco and a week in PV and found that getting bus info was very difficult and many advised us that it was too dangerous. Airfare was prohibitively expensive. We ended up cancelling the Acapulco portion.
we have been both places and really enjoyed them. Good luck!

I understand daily flights are available between CUN & PVR via Mexico City.

Once again, as the prior poster suggested, check the fares - a one way fare could be very expensive. We have thought to island hope in the Caribbean a few times and research shows the same problems - it is difficult to get between islands.

Cancun has been my favorite place to go for the past few years, but we just went to PV over Xmas and did enjoy it. It is more of a real Mexican town - to walk around and shop and has a very nice boardwalk along the water. However, the beaches are not as nice since the waters are not that turquoise blue and the sands are not white and fine. But in Cancun, although I love it for the beaches, I feel like it is just the US moved to Mexico along the Hotel Zone - including the prices for goods and food. There is not much to downtown Cancun.

If you Have to pick one over the other, I would vote for Cancun. You could spend an extra week in Cozumel - I always wanted to do that.
