100,000 free air tickets - Germanwings
I just received an email from European LCC Germanwings where they are having a promotion giving away 100,000 free tickets - you just pay the taxes and fees.

Smells like a scam and sounds too good to be true---the 2 major ingredients of a scam. Therefore, this must be a scame.
I once won 2 free airline tickets on Orbitz when it first opened its website. I did not have to pay any taxes, fees, handling charges, etc... Think of it for a second or two. Why does one have to PAY anything to get something that is FREE? frenchieinme ![]() |

Well, sounds good if you manage to find two cities on your travel route. Its strictly a seasonal offer with most discounted flights close to or past midnight.
Chances are all good routes have been already picked up by the locals. Kola |

Actually, this is a common practice of European LCC's. Indeed RyanAir every year has a million of more free seats they offer in late December / early January. Last year it was four million.
I have bought tickets on the free, or 1 British penny or 1 eurocent promos on four European LCC's. With taxes and fees the actual price worked out to a bit over $20. I had no trouble with the flights.

Actually, not much is truly free anyway.
Many "free" benefits given to employees in many industrees are considered income - and taxed accordingly. If you ever win a "free" car, consider the cash option, because the value is considered taxable income (and the value is based on MSRP, not what you would have been willing to pay). Look at SkyAuction. When they first started (and Onsale Auctions way back when), you could win a week in a condo, or airfare for a bid of $1, and you stil can sometimes. But then you still pay taxes and fees above that bid, because those are fees that are unavoidable. Every once in a while you'll see some prizes structured so that you net after taxes is the advertised prize value, but not very often. This is probably a legitimate deal, just not the great for those in the US. The best tickets do go fast.
