have a good price to arizona. have never used this airlines. usually jet blue or southwest, but this price, i believe, beats both and the times flight times are really what i want. can anyone give me info as to how dependable this airlines is in regard to cancellations, keeping to schedule, changing times or adding a stop over??

America West has been a major airline serving numerous U.S. cities from Phoenix and Las Vegas for many years. Over a year ago they merged with and are now a part of US Airways. For better or worse, you can expect essentially the same polices and service as with any other major U.S. airline.

Actually, America West was just bought out by US Airways, but we have flown them twice as they are one of the few direct flights to Phoenix from Ft. Lauderdale and had no problems. You will be fine!

I stand by my comment. The merger took place on September 27, 2005, over a year ago. Here is a sample article. US Air was bankrupt and didn't have the resources to purchase America West. Outsiders provided about $1.5 billion in new cash but neither airline made purchase payments to the other or their shareholders.

We flew them twice recently

We flew them twice recently from San Jose and were very pleased which means NO PROBLEMS.

Thumbs up

Like Dave Said , Phoenix and Las Vegas are their "HUB" cities. I have always found them to have the best schedule/connections to Vegas . the Airline is Technicaly U.S Airways now since the merger, but I still see Flights listed as America West. and last time I flew them the Planes were still flying the Am West paint scheme. I suspect it's just a time consuming process to get everything changed over. their websites have combined under U.S. Airways and their FF programs are merged under the Dividend Miles program RT

As long as you don't need to depend on on-time arrivals to catch another flight, you'll be fine. Most of their flights around here are 30% on time...

America West is A Okay!!

We flew them from Toronto (YYZ) to Phoenix (PHX) last year and they were terrific - certainly better in price, in-flight service/amenity (we did bring our own sandwiches but the pitch on the seats was really good) and on-time arrival to our beloved Air Canada...

We would fly them again in a heartbeat.

Before the merger with US Air, America West was routinely one of the best U.S. airlines in on-time arrival performance. For example, in October 2005, only Hawaiian, Skywest, Frontier and Comair had better on-time records. 84.1% of America West's flights arrived "on time" that month. On a monthly basis in 2005, America West routinely ranked among the top six (out of 20) carriers. There's no reason to believe that the America West division of US Air has slipped since then.

Good service on AirWest

I have flown America West about 10 times in the last 2-3 years and have had excellent results. Flights have been on time and comfortable. I've flown from St. Louis to Vegas, Phoenix, Monterey (CA) and probably a few other places. Not any better than others, but competes head on.

Bad experiences...

We had a flight SFO to Las Vegas for our anniversary 2 years ago. (pre-merger) The flight was to depart at 10am. We arrived at 8am to check in. We were informed that our 10am flight had been cancelled, but that she would put us on the 11am flight. Grrr.. not exactly how we wanted to spend our anniversary! We began boarding at 10:45. But the agent taking our boarding pass said "Wait -you're not on this flight." Turns out, the ticket agent at 8am had given us 11am boarding passes, but had booked us on a 9am flight! (Which, obviously, had already departed.) And this flight (11am) was full. I was furious. I made a bit of a scene. The agents and flight attendants were scrambling. The captain actually got off the plane to see what was happening! And I actually cried in front of him - their airline was royally screwing up our anniversary. He made a call, and got permission to offer bumps. Since the other passengers had seen what was going on and could see the airline was in a real bind, they waited until they were offered something like $400 and a first class flight later. Can't say I blame them! We were given free drinks for our hassle...alcohol at 11am - great.

Another story, more recent.

For Christmas, I flew our son flew home from boot camp on US Air, not knowing about the merger. Booked on Orbitz. Due to the Denver snowstorm a day or two earlier, there were some delays - but no one bothered to notify me until two hours before his first flight leg. We simply received a computerized call with the new arrival time in Las Vegas (his layover). No mention that it was a late arrival. Thank God my wife remembered the time the computer told her, and that I realized it would be 8 minutes AFTER his connecting flight departed. I called Orbitz - they knew nothing and told me to call US Air. They claimed to know nothing, either - but I insisted on talking to a superviser and that's when they confirmed that his flight would be an hour late. They could not provide another flight out of Las Vegas that night. As my son had friends he could stay with in Vegas, he simply booked a flight for 10 am the next morning to get home.

He called the next morning (Christmas Eve day) at 8:30am from the Las Vegas airport. His 10am flight had been cancelled, and he was in line to rebook. The only flight he could catch was at 4pm. Then WE got another Orbitz computer call, saying that that 4pm flight was cancelled. I called US Air and got him on a 6pm flight - and prayed he would get home on that one. He did, an hour late, but at least he was home for Christmas. For that, I am thankful, but I'll never use that airline again.
