Luckily, none of these places were on my want-to-visit list. Most of these are pretty obviously places to avoid! I'd like to know what the next ten or so would be.

I'm surprised that Iraq is not on the list.

Vacationing where their are machine guns outside the resort would be enough warning for me to avoid that destination altogether.

Iraq and Afghanistan ARE on the list! In fact, at the top of the list. The link takes you to the middle of the photo spread. Use the left arrow to get back to the beginning.

My friends went on a South American cruise last fall and Rio and Buenos Aires wasnt all that safe.

In Rio they were woke up by the sweet sound of gun fire below thier hotel balcony. The military was having some trouble controlling some of the locals. Three of the people cruising were mugged while waiting in line to board the ship in Buenos Aires.

These might be isolated instances, I dont know. One time while I was in Mazatlan I was a little shaken up when the military was running with all thier hardware on the beach. I later was told that they are there to protect me.
Mexico is fairly safe. I take extra precautions when Im not in the U.S. Whenever we have gone abroad, it always felt good to get back on U.S. soil and yet the countries we visited always made me feel welcome.

It is always a good idea to know your surroundings, especially while traveling. I never take jewelry and I carry as little cash as possible. I will take pack a fanny pack and wear it under my shirt. Im a little more relaxed at home but anything can happen there too.

I am not sure the family of the Canadian couple who were murdered last year in Mexico in their resort (case still unresolved) OR the parents of the young fellow who was killed in a Mexican night club this year would share this view.

That said, I have been in Mexico many times, the last time in December 2006
but I do take precautions.

Is it coincidence or .. ?

News media report this morning that two Canadians were injured on Saturday when somebody fired into the lobby of the Casa Inn hotel in Acapulco, Mexico. The couple, from Ontario, suffered minor injuries to their legs and were treated in a local hospital.

The incident comes only weeks after 19-year-old youth from Woodbridge, Ont. was struck by a car and killed in Acapulco.

Is this a pattern or coincidence ?
