Shoud I wait to buy tickets?

Here is the situation. I am taking my brother to New Orleans (Quarter House) on March 23. The airfares seem a little high right now, but are much lower for earlier departures in March (e.g. March 9.) As I do not know how busy New Orleans is at the end of March, do you think it would be better to wait 2 or 3 weeks to see if the fares go down? Thanks for your help.

Over the past 18 months or so, fares have gone up much more often than they have gone down. Any fare sales for that period have likely already come and gone.

The March 23-25 weekend is either the start of or the end of spring vacation for schools in 15 different states, perhaps accounting for the higher fares. Most likely, there are fewer remaining seats on many flights on that weekend than for similar flights at the beginning of March.

I would buy tickets today or tomorrow. On most airlines, if the fare later drops, you can request a voucher (not a "refund") for the difference to apply to another ticket purchase within the next year. But if the fares go up further, you'll be kicking yourself!

Dave - Thanks for your wonderful advice. With no kids involved in this trip, school vacations never ocurred to me. To save some money, I decided to book the Delta flights (nonstop) on Thursday instead of Friday. It came out to $198 per person instead of $385.00 on Friday.
