Any ideas where to go on a weekend without kids in Dec (m)

We don't have capable grandparents or family to take care of our children for adult only vacations. Well, this year I'm celebrating a milestone birthday and friends of the family are gonna watch our kids for 3 nights. So we are looking for somewhere to go. The only issues I see is that we are going in the winter. End of December. We are willing to fly anywhere but worried about canceled flights and weather problems. So where should we go. We live near Sacramento airport. I so far have thought of San Diego, New York or Orlando. We are going to go all out for this trip. So I'm looking for resort recommendations as well. Any ideas? It's been 10 years since we've gone anywhere without the kids.

Woo hoo! Congratulations! I am still impatiently awaiting the day when I can go overnight without the kids.

Weather going East is a big concern. What if you got stuck going or coming, would your friends be able to hang out with the kids longer? Plus you lose a whole day just going. I absolutely LOVE NY, but if I had a chance to go away the last week of December, I'd go to a Hawaiian island or San Diego (and hope it's warm). Orlando is very busy at the end of the year too. You picked my favorite places!

The other idea would be Napa Valley...I love it there. I haven't been there in the winter, but we love wine tasting and fireplaces and cozy quilts. There are some great bed and breakfasts and even the new Shell Vacation Club resort that opened recently.

Do you want to be busy or relax? What kind of weather do you prefer? I love Portland and Seattle too, though December would definitely be wet. Great restaurants and nice hotels.

How about Cabo San Lucas? a quick two and half hours' flight from SFO (not sure if there is direct flight from SMF. Lots of nice resorts, nice restaurants, great weather, and it's the beginning of whale-watching season. We were there in mid Dec last year and saw quite a few whales from shore.

I too had a milestone birthday in December a couple of years ago and decided to get away without the kids. We went to Breckenridge and it was awesome. We went in the middle of December, when the kids were still in school and stayed at Hyatt Main Street. Mid December is our absolute favorite time to travel. Kids are still in school and destinations are not too busy because the holiday is coming. Everything is absolutely beautiful because of Christmas decorations.
I would just make sure I did not spend my entire trip traveling since you do not have much time. How about Tahoe?

I agree that Cabo would be great. You only have 3 nights...make the most of it.

You know I don't know if I want to relax or not. We haven't been away from the kids in a long time. We probably wouldn't know what to do without them. I just want to be able to look at things, shop without the kids saying can we go now... kinda of thing. Eat meals when I'm hungry not when they are hungry, etc...

I love warm weather. Prior to kids we use to ski but I don't know if snow is guarantee at the end of December. I was thinking we should go somewhere where we never been. We've never been to Seattle. I'll have to check it out.

Yes, our friends could watch the kids longer if we got delayed. However, I don't want to impose too much if you know what I mean. I'm just gracious they can even watch my kids.

I'll have to check into that. I looked at Puerta Vallarata but the flight times didn't work from Sacto. They were very early in the morning like 6 am departing.

Now that's an idea. What did you do in Breckenridge? How was the weather?

Tahoe would be okay but just not much to do for us since we go there alot.

Thanks for all the ideas... I love the Napa idea too except I'm allergic to red wine but it still might be a possibility. I love fine dining and shopping without the kids. I even thought of Sausalito too. Found a great hotel overlooking the bay.

Keep the ideas coming.... Thanks...

With only a weekend, I wouldn't go very far - otherwise you will spend most of your time traveling. How about Las Vegas? From CA, you can be there in little more than an hour. There isn't much to do in Sausalito - if you just want to relax and walk, it would be fine, but besides that, it's pretty quiet.

Please don't even think about taking your first trip in 10 years without the kids to Orlando...

You could have a fantastic time in NYC, but December is the busiest month in the city, lots of shopping/holiday crowds.... so up to you if you want to deal with that. We have family that came from Sacramento last year and spent a whirlwind 3 or 4 nights, they had a great time. Saw a few shows, lots of great food, out after hours.... not a lot of sleep, though

I too like Cabo Went there for our honeymoon 30 some years ago
Never been back (when we were there, there was only 1 hotel )
But air fare from PA is too much

Like Puerto Vallerta and Mazatlan also

Going to the areas in Mexico, tho, I don't feel 3 days is enough time

I agree with Las Vegas some gambling, a nice show and dinner

For my daughter's 1 yr anniv (they live in OR now) they went to Cannon Beach, OR for the weekend at the end of January. Looks so pretty there and had a good time.

The other idea is to spend a long weekend in Mendocino area. There are quite a few nice bed and breakfasts there. The area is lovely if you don't mind the rain. Also, good chance to spot whales (can you tell that I love whales )

I think I'd find a cabin up in the redwoods and sit by the fire. We stayed at Kings Canyon once years ago and it was very nice.

I'd visit Mexico...Cabo or Mazatlan maybe. You can get there quickly and will have plenty of time to spend together. A trip to the East coast...whether NY or Orlando would take ALOT of time away from you since almost an entire day on each end is required for the flights. If you want the disney experience (to be kids together)...then I'd visit Disneyland and stay at the Newport Coast villas. Just an opinion.

I would either go to Cabo or Las Vegas. If I only went to Hawaii for 3 days, the sweetheart would have to be pretty stong to drag me back on to the plane.

3 days in Vegas is enough for me. A good show, maybe a short hike, a good jetted bath and some good wine. Probably would have to do some gambling, too.

Have fun. It took me and the husband 10 years for our first getaway from our kids. No wonder he is the x.

Our first trip without the kids was last Sept to Kauai when my kids were 13 and 16. We only spent a long weekend there (leaving Thursday, back Monday morning) but it's so worth it.

3 Days NYC

Yes I vote for NYC I had friends from LA this past Dec. for 5 days , left LA mid Nite and was in NYC 7:30 am and hit the street runing ,
Shop, all day, see two broadway shows and sight see all nite as that time of year in NYC its a lot to see and eat. including hot nuts and hot dogs on the street at 2 in the morning,
Try red week to see if there are any good rentals at the Manhattan Club as its one of the best lacation to get around NYC from ,or post a request on tug new bbs rental wanted

Yep I vote NYC

stay on west coast for 3 days--here are some ideas

Vancouver--and you could drive up to Whistler, if you wanted. Lake Tahoe, San Diego, or Palm Springs, Las Vegas (tons to do without gambling--great spas, restaurants, fancy hotels). But, I also second Cabo--we just got back for a Jan trip without kids in the Caribbean---nothing beats sipping a cold drink under a hut in the warm breeze knowing that others are wearing snowsuits!

Also, another thought, you could go on a 3 day cruise out of LA to Mexico---really fun and relaxing--you get on and you are instantly in a festive mood--but, we have also done short cruises without the kids and just ate and slept til 10 AM and skipped the shows and just watched TV in the room in peace at night and had a great time.

How long is this weekend? Personally, for just a weekend I wouldn't fly since it would eat up too much time. I'd head to Carmel.

Our weekend would start Thursday and end on Sunday night. So we do have some flexibility to flights.

I love the Hawaii idea but I gotta for longer time. Besides my dd5 gave me a list of places we can't go because she wants to go. Can we say SPOILED with vacations. LOL.. My other kid doesn't care where we go.

We've been to Vegas a billion times. I've done a lot of girl weekends there. But still an option as it is close by.

Keep the ideas coming. I'm looking at airfare. The Mexico idea is good but the flights aren't that great. I'm wondering if I'm looking early. It looks like they only fly early like 6 am. Which would be too early for us. I couldn't find very many later flights like 1 pm or so. Coming home they had great times.

I'm gonna check out Vancouver next.

Does the Southwest have good weather in December like Sedona or New Mexico?
