For quite a few years, Choice hotels have been my first choice in hotels because their system for awarding ff miles was extremely user friendly, with no need to join anything or accumulate miles in a program before sending them in a group to a specifc pre-selected airline. I avoided hotels connected to TripRewards becuase that program is way too cumbersome. With Choice I had no follow up to do and could shift which of the 4 ff programs I use that I sent the miles to from hotel stay to hotel stay.
My last few stays with Choice, however, have been a departure from what I had previously experienced.
1) At a Charlotte, NC property, the front desk person said there was a dollar limit for ''qualifying stays'' and my rate didn't qualify so I didn't get miles. Actually the rules on the website on qualifying stays do NOT use dollar amounts and my AAA rate DID qualify!
2) At a property near the Norfolk airport, the front desk staff said they did not give air miles just some crappy stamps. The next morning someone else was at the desk so I tried again. This person seemed completely out to sea on the issue, but at least agreed to call a Choice Hotels office to ask. The company office talked them thorugh how to do it. In the process, I noticed that name on the receipt had my middle name in place of my last name and pointed out that this appeared twice on the document and would probably stop me getting the miles. They took it back in a huff and made changes but handed it back with my name correct as paying for the room but still wrong as to occupying the room. I asked that the correct this as well, but at this point they said they had spent enough time and refused.
3) At a different Charlotte, NC property, the front desk seemed unaware of the miles provision and offered the same crappy stamps. I showed him the space to put the ff number in, and he finally did that.
I did not get my miles in 1 and 2, and who knows about 3. If their front desk people behave like this one more time when I stay at Choice, it will likely be my last stay with them. The hassle factor is outweighing the miles recieved.
