Self weighing luggage

I think I'll just buy a cheap scale at Walmart or Walgreen's and leave it behind when we head home. Either that or find an inexpensive hanging scale (like a fish scale) that packs easily in my luggage and take that with us.

I wonder how long it would take the airlines to beak either the face plate of the scale or the scale itself? I've taken to buying inexpensive luggage as it seems to last about as long as the more expensive stuff we used to buy.

$180 is a lot of excess baggage.

In answer to 'how long would it take the handlers to break it?' About 30 seconds.

I can also visualise the arguments at check-in if the weight indicated on the case was lower than that shown by the airline scales.

It's a lot of money but maybe it will be the precursor to bags that scream out "STOP - I"M GOING TO ST. MAARTIN, NOT MADRID !!!" to baggage handlers...

I don't know if it's really a lot of money. We just bought two cases (wheelies) that cost us $130 each. We had shopped for about a year to find a price that low. Of course, a couple of months latter Tuesday Morning had a one day sale which had a brand that was marked down to $59. I went ahead and bought one of them as well just for good measure. It's not as good of quality but the way the airlines treat my luggage, who cares.

Right now they're as low as $143 (depending on the size) http://www.shopzilla.com/8B--Luggag...lutions luggage scale__search_box--1__sfsk--4

We bought a "weigher" at the Samsonite store for about $10. You hook it on your luggage handle and pick it up for an approximate weight. We found it hard for our smaller family members to pick up a 50 pound bag that way, but at least we could get a good idea of the weight. It was small enough to pack.

Unfortunately, my daughter left it behind at Kona Hawaiian Village last year. Hopefully a TUGger found it.

I've been casually looking for one of these off and on for the last year or so. On our last trip to Vegas I walked right by a Samsonite store because their "outlet" prices have become to high. Now I wish I'd have just gone ahead and broused the store a little.

We'll be in Branson, MO next month and they also have a Samsonite outlet store in one of the larger outlet malls there. Maybe I'll stop in to see if they have one there. If not I'm sure I can always order it online.

We handle the weight problem this way:

Smaller suitcases never go over 50 lb if they are full of clothes--you would need to put some ceramic or metal or liquid in there to make them go over 50 lb. Anyway--we always carry on if they are carry-on sized.

If we are taking the big suitcases (away for more than 8 days), then we weigh them before we leave home to see how heavy they are. Generally we are under 40 lbs, but we don't stuff the cases either.

If we spend too much on items to bring home, we know we can add some to each case and still be within the limits. But we are not the biggest souvenir people anymore, so we generally don't add more than a few lbs to the cases.

I think that what works in our favor is that we pack lighter than many people. Over the years we have figured out that we don't need as much as we once thought we did, and it really makes vacationing much easier.

What's that expression about packing the cases, taking out half the clothes but bringing twice as much money? That is pretty much the way we go.:whoopie:

I'll think we will save the $180 for a nice dinner while on vacation.:D.......2 weeks till Hilton Head and 6 weeks till Aruba....
