Several ladies from my job would like a weekend in New York. We will probably need to get a few hotel rooms. Can anyone suggest a place that is not too pricey but clean and comfortable? We can use all of the help you can give. We would like to see a show and do some shopping and of course eating. Please send me your suggestions before next week. We are planning this trip for mid May. None of us have been to NY in a long time. We will have 2 20ish ladies 2 40ish and 2 upper 40 to 50ish ladies.

I too am planning a trip to NYC in mid-May. Mine just happens to be mid-May 2008. None of this last minute rush stuff for me.

You might want to try Priceline for the Rooms. Go to www.biddingfortravel.com and check out current prices for NYC. You can also look at the hotels Priceline generally offers. I would first bid Midtown East, next bid, Midtown West, then Upper East Side. If you bid one area at a time, you will have several free rebids. And you can request several rooms. I would think you can get a three to five star for $120 to $150 per night. There is a lot of information on the site about how to bid.

You might find a room in that price range, but it'll be a marginal hotel. Three to five star (whatever that means, but I assume it to be high end) will run you a minimum of $500-$600 per night. And that's not a suite. The demand for hotel rooms in Manhattan has pushed the prices into the ionosphere.

If you stick to 4 star hotels on Priceline, they shouldn't be that marginal. We got into the Sheraton on 7th and 53rd for under $150, but that was dead of winter. Not my favorite hotel in Manhattan, but the bed was supercomfy and the room was clean. Check biddingfortravel for prices. The Grand Hyatt on 42nd and Lex often comes up on Midtown East searches; the hotel is huge, and if they aren't booked for a convention, etc. they let the extra rooms go on Priceline.

Keep in mind that using Priceline only guarantees one bed/two people occupancy. Most ladies traveling together would prefer their own bed. Travelzoo and Quickbook often have great specials. I like tripadvisor for hotel reviews and recommendations. There are so many, it's really overwhelming!

search the Archives of the Washington Post for a great article about "Budget Hotels in NYC." It had great reviews of hotels I never knew existed--and I've lived here all my life.

try Embassy Suites New York, 6 persons per suite, including breakfast; Westin New York Times Square, 3 nights and pay only 2.

I am there too in May, for my dates ES were $ 400.-- per night; Westin from $ 800.-- for 3 nights. I will be there with 6 persons as well.

We Love ,Love the Salisbury on W57 and 7th ave across from Carnegie Hall. They have comfy rooms with 2 double beds and a mini fridge (so necessary!!) and wet bar for resaonable rates. They also have suites which are huge and have 2 beds and a sleep sofa (and the mini kitchen) so it is very easy to put three in one room and all have separate beds. They also offer cont. breakfast for around $3-5.00 a person! It is a great, older hotel which used to be an aprtment bldg. Below and over 2 doorways is Angelos coal oven pizza and it is fantastic!!! You can walk over to 5th ave and bloomingdales is about 15 min walk as is times square. It is a great find.

For the sake of clarity, I'm certainly not being snobby about these places. My info comes from my godson, who's in the business, but perhaps his viewpoint is peculiar because he works in one of the real upmarket hotels. But I have read that demand is outstripping supply. Best of luck.

I just booked the Milford Plaza for 3 nights in July for $160/night. Never stayed there; hopefully it's decent (website looks good). Location is excellent--half a block off Times Square by the Marriott Marquis. www.milfordplaza.com

If you haven't already done so, check out the Milford Plaza Hotel TripAdvisor
reviews (www.tripadvisor.com).

The reviews are mostly positive. The reviewers just caution that the rooms are small as are the 2 elevators too (and slow). One reviewer mentioned that the elevators are being updated, so you might want to check when that renovation is expected to be completed.

I was going to suggest the Holiday Inn Express as our family stayed there in February for about 160 a night (through Orbitz). Going directly to the HolidayInn Express website and Orbitz both show $340 a night for May 18th - May 20th. Maybe it is summer rates or the good rates we had before have ended.

You might try across the river...either at one of the ferry stops or near Newark Airport. A short train ride into town might be in order.
