Taking Precriptions through Airport Security
I will be on vacation for about 10 days. Can I take 10 days worth of precriptions in one container, or do they all have to be in their "own" container? Thanks!

Assuming that these are pills, I have not had anyone ever ask me about the presecriptions, which I put into one bottle.
They haven't even looked at the bottle. Liquids are another story, and someone else probably knows more.

If you are traveling internationally, you should take them in their original containers, as security personnel in some countries might allege you are carrying illegal or unprescribed drugs. In the U.S., that's not as much of an issue, but TSA still recommends that prescription drugs in carryons be in labeled containers.
I carry a variety of prescription pills in an unmarked container on about 100 flights per year and have never had a problem - domestically or internationally. (I don't follow my own advice!) Still, you're better off if you have a clear understanding of the rules, especially for liquid or gel medications in your carryons. See the TSA rules for medications. |

I carry all our prescription drugs in their own containers rather than a single container. That way, if there is a medical emergency, people helping us would know what drugs we are taking.

I take a prescription pill that comes in blister packs (imported from the UK) rather than loose pills in a bottle. So I always carry a copy of the prescription with me. I was worried about this at first, but no one at security has ever asked to see it.

I have never had anyone look at my prescription bottles, and I usually carry about 10 or more of them. However, I will combine non prescription like vitamins with something else. Also, keep in mind when traveling, ALWAYS bring extra prescription meds with you in case you get stuck wherever you are.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I take 7 pills a day and one injectible shot.
I do NOT carry them in their seperate containers. However, each time I visit my doctor or get lab work done I get a single print-out of the names & dosages of my prescriptions. I have never been asked for this documentation when going through security. (Even when declaring my insulin). I use the Sun-Sat pill containers that are so convenient & compact and also help me keep track if I've actually taken my daily doses. But when the "gel" regulations came in to place I had to declare my insulin at the security desk. How embarrassing! I usually tell the first person in security that my portable collapsable cooler contains a gel to chill my medication. They indicate the appropriate person in line (who is going to screen my bag) and I have to tell that person as well. Each time that second person has pulled out my gel bag (inside of the quart zip lock baggie) and pulls it in the air for everyone to see! You may not think that's embarrassing but it peaques other people's curiosity. I was tempted to transport a cheese ball with my meds the last time we flew, not knowing if they consider cheese a gel or not. It seems the security is just interested in pulling out the gel pack and not anything else in the bag. |

The last time I flew, something in my roll-a-board attracted the attention of the TSA screener. He opened my bag and then said, "Oh, it's only your prescriptions". I was glad they were in their original containers with the pharmacy labels on them. Better safe than sorry, even if it causes a packing challenge.

My prescription bottles are quite large and with seven of them, I'd rather pack for convenience. I love my Sun-Sat pill holder! As long as you have the papers from your doctor it is the same as having the bottle. I no longer get 7 individual papers from my doctor, now they're all printed on one.
