Prague B & B or?

Travelling for the month of April 2008 in northern Europe. Need input on B & B's in Prague 1st week in April, and then Munich the last week in April. Will have two weeks of time shares in between.

Also car rental agency to use for driving thru 5 countries overall. Will return to same airport or city (Munich.)
Thanks
Roman

We are leaving for Prague on May 15th. We are renting an apartment through www.escapetoprague.com I have been in touch with them and they seem very conscientious. The apartments are well located. I can let you know how everything is when I return.

Since you're planning to cross borders, make sure you ask each agency what's involved. For my rental including Portugal and Spain, I was surprised to learn that, while it's allowed, all the agencies required a "cross border card" (or some such). Most of the discount rental agencies charged 50 Eu for that. EconomyCarRentals charged 15 Eu. So while they were about 20 Eu higher on the base rental, they were cheaper for me overall. YMMV.

Eastern Europe (and Italy) require particular concern in car rentals. Most car rental contracts do not let you take cars there from elsewhere in Europe, unless the car is specially insured for those countries. That does often cost extra, but my rentals in Germany from Europe By Car were at the usual German rate and with no increase for authorization to take the car into the Czech Republic. On the other hand, I have never seen a fee to cross between Germany, Austria, Switzeerland, France, Belgiuim, Netherlands, Luxembrug, and the Scandanavian countries.

Before checking on B&B's, I would check out the Grand Hotel Europa. It is in a wonderful art deco building that is described in some guidebooks as being the most beautiful building on Wencelas Square. It has a great location. The breakfast buffet in a large 2nd floor room overlooking Wencelas Square is quite good. When I go to Prague, I always cross my fingers that the Europa has not been bought, renovated, and had its prices soar. Although not renovated, the rooms are reasonably comfortable. If you really want to cut costs, the upper floor or two are European-style with a shared bathroom on the hall, which are even cheaper. It you want to go the other direction, try the apartment furnished with antiques that they have availible.

I have used this service;

http://www.pragueholiday.cz/apartments.html

only problem was paying by credit card at their office. Get it in writing from the booking agent you are allowed to pay by card. they expect cash.

airport/hotel transfer service is very good.

Left Prague in Mid-April and we were very pleased with the studio apartment we found on VRBO.com. It was $55.00 a night, spotlessly clean, right on a tram line, had free computer use and free washer and dryer use. The owners were on site and were very helpful. If you haven't found a spot yet, I'll check and see what the web contact is (we're in London now).
