Griffith Park Fire in Los Angeles

I saw the huge smoke cloud this afternoon on the 710 Fwy North.

And then this evening driving home from San Pedro on the 110 Fwy (south of LA) the fire looks like a volcano up in the hills over LA. It was quite an amazing site!

Sounds like tonite on the news they are evacuating some homes around Los Feliz, which is just east of Hollywood.

There are some pictures on Yahoo, showing the Griffith Park Observatory (just reopened after a remodel) with the fire behind it. The news just announced it's close to the Greek Theater, for those of you who know LA.

My sister just told me that it looks like it is coming very near the observatory. She says that she doesn't know if they are going to evacuate the zoo or not.

Its very sad. Griffith Park is the fifteenth largest city park in the US (see here).

Fern, earlier at the news tonight they told us that all the animals are locked in and that they keep watering the structure down. The news will be on again and I will see what the latest update is. It is a very big fire and it is very hot and dry so not good. The worst part of it is that it is arson again.

I was flying from Maui to LAX last night and we circled around it at around 8:30PM last night. You could clearly see two lines of fire and all the hot spots. I've never seen anything like that before from the air.

How sad. Spent a lot of time in Griffith Park when I was growing up.

I commented to my wife last night about how interesting this must look to flights coming in to LAX.

Thankfully, as of now the fire seems to more under control.

Definitely one of the two most interesting things I've seen flying. The other one was approaching the Bay area coast from a distance and seeing 4 columns of planes flying in circles and hearing the very odd instructions on entering the pattern on channel 9 on United.

Yes, I heard it was under control this morning. That's good. Last night the FA guessed that the fire was in the Hollywood Hills. He wasn't that far off.

I heard today that the fire was an accident and not arson. I also heard this morning that the animals were OK but not all the wild ones escaped the fire.

An interesting link is here but not for long. There are so many fires right now in different states because of not enough rain. We will have plenty more here in southern CA.

One fire is not out yet or we have another one. It is pretty close to the city of Avalon where most people land on the island. You can read more here.

The Griffith Park fire is still listed too but further down the web page, I just noticed now.

Got email from an old high-school buddy last night. He lives directly across the street from Griffith Park. The pictures he sent, showing the flames creeping toward his house, were truly scary. And the aftermath pictures look like a moonscape. Still, I'm so glad that he and his partner are OK, and that they had the good sense to evacuate when requested.

Yes, it looks like a pretty big fire on Catalina now. A lot of the residents have evacuated. I heard they had to set up fuel refilling stations for the choppers in Palos Verdes, since Catalina has run out of jet fuel.

Looks like we may be in for a long, long, long fire season.
