Car rental in Denver

I'm going to need a car for a few days in Denver (in July). I know the usual places to try (priceline, Travelocity, etc) but does anyone know of good local companies or other recommendations for me? (Also companies to avoid!)

Thanks!

We've been to the Denver area several times this winter (HGVC Valdoro & High Country Club properties). We've found that the best deal in Denver has been the Alamo "Last Minute" specials on their web site. The Alamo shuttle and counter service at Denver is fine and the cars have been great.

What are the "Last Minute Specials" with Alamo? We are going to be there in August

Go to the Alamo site and hit the "Hot Deals" button at the top of the page. There is a "last minute specials" link on the Hot Deals page.

The last minute specials are usually good for the next two or three weeks only but have multiple car types at all major locations. I've even been able to use a coupon with some last minute specials.

Note that even though it's a last minute special, I can usually negotiate for an upgrade at the counter!

Get the right car!

FWIW I have always had good luck with Thrifty in Denver. if you are heading up the mountian I suggest you make sure you have a car with a V6 or larger! the first time there we rented a small dodge with a 4 cyl. I had it on the floor and was in Passing Gear all the way up the grade! 20 miles of WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH! stopped twice because I thought there was something wrong with the car! and I am a Master Automotive Mechanic! Just not enough poop to propel the car up the mountian! RT

The RIGHT car

Good point about getting the "right" car. Alamo almost always has Standard SUVs in their "last minute" specials for Denver. The "midsize" SUVs don't go over the mountains as well. The cost is usually only $20 more per week on special.

Cool

I just booked a full-size at DEN for the upcoming week for $105 base. With taxes and fees it's $146. Not too bad. The following link is also some interesting reading.
