Portland Rose Parade - 100 Years of Turf Claiming

This issue is really heating up here in Portland.

A local newspaper is sponsoring an event to pull up all the place saving tape people have been putting along the parade route over the past couple of weeks.

http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/06/leonards_tape_attack_gets_stic.html

Earlier this year, I saw a real-live, blood drawing, fist fight (in front of one of the guy's small daughters no less, who was reduced to tears) between two guys at the Grand Mayan / Mayan Palace (Rivera Maya) pool over the pool chair saving issue. One of the guys had marked his collection of pool chairs with a shoe AND a book, and the other guy had the audacity to remove them several hours later to take over the space.

I'm not sure if the tape pulling volunteers here in Portland know what they are signing up for. It could turn into a real rumble.

Wow, that's really pathetic! I thought parades were supposed to be fun.

It does seem odd to me that a city would condone the taping - every parade I have ever been to, you go reserve your spot as early as you like, but no "saving" days in advance. We had friends who used to live along the Pasadena Rose Parade route, and we STILL had to get there early if we wanted to be in the front row on their sidewalk!

Oh well, hope it all works out in Portland...
