Most economic way to supplement Newport Coast Villa week

I got confirmed for a 2008Jun week at NCV, the DW wants to supplement with a second week, making a 14 day stay!

Our likely choices so far for obtaining the 2nd week are:

1) put in another Marriott week into II to exchange. Total cost of this method is approximately $800 (for MF and exch fee) and lost of 110k MRP (annual exchange of unit back to MVCI)

2) give up MRP's to reserve into one of the local Marriott Hotels (cat 5 and 6's). Total cost of this method is approximately 130k MRPs, which is 1/2 way to a travel package to Hawaii (our next trip following NCV) - this also costs us in terms of using up little over one year's worth of MRP's that we 'earn' through trading in our MMC week and cred card expenditures.

3) rent from someone - cost is unknown

I'd like to hear feedbacks/views on which way folks think is more 'economical'

I would use mrp and stay in the Dana Point Marriott. If you have a Marriott visa and take some of your meals or spa treatments in the hotel then you will get at least 13 points for every dollar you spend and as much as 15 if you have the upgraded card plus another 20 to 30% depending on your mr status. Take the tour for Newport Coast and take the points which are any where from 10,000 to 20,000 points. Marriott usually give more points to hotel guest who sign up for a tour. You can Schedule the tour for when you are staying at NVC. Thus your week could end costing only 100,000 point.

you have a pm
I called the dept handling the 3-day $225 tour (stay at local Marriott, not NC Villas) cannot be booked yet for Jun/Jun 2008. But the guy says if I buy now, I will be pretty much assurred I can get the Jun/Jul days we want since we are so early and when those dates open up, I will be ahead of everyone. Sounds a little 'weasily' if you know what I mean.

Anyone know if this sounds right?

I wouldn't do it, until they can guarantee your days. I was told the same thing with Hilton. I could only go on weekends and I tried forever to get any decent weekends and they were never available. They salesperson that sold me the promo said ti would be no problem.

yeh i am leaning against it. the guys just sounded like a weasel, literally. did not sound like a marriot-caliber rep

Winger,
I bought one of those for Ko Olina and planned on tacking it onto an exchange. I kept calling back until they opened up Sept '07 and was able to tack it onto a 2 week exchange that I had already made. So I ended up with 18 days at Ko Olina. So it does work!

You just need to be pretty compulsive calling pretty frequently. Also we had friends that just bought the NCV preview package and they were able to stay in the villas. (this month!) I'm not sure if they paid extra to guarantee that or whether they just called early enough.

I paid $100 extra to get a Ko Olina 1 BR unit for my package so be sure to ask for that if it interests you.

thanks Jan. did anyone give you a good ideal what timeframe the week(s) you wanted was going to open up? or you just kept calling?

Newport Coast

I'd like to test this idea myself, of extending my stay at the Newport Coast --or staying at a nearby Marriott -- 3 days by taking the tour the weekend of Oct 12. Who would I contact to see if such a tour exists?

Call 888-765-3575 and refer to the "Interval World offer" for a 3-night stay at a Newport Beach hotel (your stay will normally not be at the timeshare resort), including a $100 Nordstrom gift certificate ($50 more if you arrive Sunday through Thursday). All for $225 (total, not per night) and your attendance at a 90-minute sales presentation for Newport Coast Villas.

The info is based on an ad in the latest quarterly II magazine.

Winger,
They did tell me approximately when the new months were going to be released. I called a few times before that time frame just to be sure I got the dates I needed.

Good luck. It should work for you.

If the second week is also in June, IMO, the surest way to get it is to exchange via II or do a swap with a NCV owner. June isn't hard to reserve and an owner can get you the exact dates quite easily. Also, an owner swap would get you owner preference for location, which may or may not be important to you.

well, I will have my sunterra sun options (new Diamond Resorts/Polo Towers conversion) in about 40 days...I will see if I can trade in for NCV for that 2nd week (Jun28-Jul5). Currently, I just booked (MRPs) the Dana Point Laguna Cliffs for this second week as backup. I do not want to book my other Marriott for the requesting the 2nd week at NCV as I am saving that for points.

Does it pay to use MRPs at the Dana Point Laguna Cliffs rather than using your second Marriott week for a trade? Will you get more points than it is costing you to reserve the week (plus you have to pay an exchange for points fee and are getting a hotel room versus a timeshare unit)? Just wondering....

thought about it - though not too much. We want to get to Hawaii on pts the following yr (2009) for two weeks (one week hotel, one week timeshare exchange), and I would need to use my 2nd 2008 week for points (rather then try for NCV trade) to do this.

Also, getting a trade into NCV for Jul 4th weekend w/ my 2nd Marriott would be a tough thing, I figured. Plus, using my new Sunterra membership in a seemly hard request gives me a chance to kick the tires and see what it can do (or not do).

We are pretty confident (or should I not be?) on using my MMC AC during flextime and getting an exchange into an Oahu timeshare for 12/16-12/23/2007 to replace the Cat 6 hotel certif I got from the travel package - if this happens, I have an available cat 6 certif to use and Dana Point is one place we would love to stay at. Gives us a good jumping point over to Catalina Island!

Excellent. Let us know how that goes. A couple of my wife's co-workers have SunOptions and I'm sure they'd like to get into NCV in summer season.

What would be easiest way(s) to find an owner willing to swap? I am usually open to new things, of course depends on what I need to give up : ).

Yep. I will try to remember to post my SunOption request....Or if your friends try, let me know how it goes with them

Also, getting a trade into NCV for Jul 4th weekend w/ my 2nd Marriott would be a tough thing, I figured.

Nearly impossible, as that's a fixed week, sold at a substantial premium to Platinum. Rent is usually about 1.5x what I get for a normal July week (or about 5-6X MF's). I'm sure some get deposited but would normally go to intra-resort exchanges.

http://ownertrades.com/ or post an exchange request on Redweek.

I can't speak for other NCV owners, but I would only consider a like trade (season and unit size). YMMV, of course :)

Planning for next summer, we too are trying to supplement out week at Newport with a hotel stay with points. However, we are considering 4-5 nights in the San Deigo area, but with 5 of us it is usually better to find a Marriott suite based chain. Any suggestions on a good marriott hotel-location in the San Deigo area? Thanks.
