1 week in Williamsburg, VA - Timeshare Users Group Online Community Forums

Is there plenty to keep my husband and me occupied around the area of Williamsburg, VA for 4 to 5 days. We would probably go spend 3 days in Washington DC out of that week so that's why I'm putting 4 to 5 days.

We want to go to NY, DC and another area so Williamsburg is what I came up with. Does anyone have suggestions for a better area for us to stay in.

We just returned from a week at Manor Club. There is SO much to do there. I wish we could have been there longer. There is so much that you may not want to spend 3 days in DC. There's Jamestown, Yorktown, Colonial Williamsburg. Then there is the Mariner's Museum in Newport News if he's into that sort of thing. There's alot in Norfolk too. We also went to Montecello and Ash Lawn. I would really love to go back.

Down in Norfolk about 45 minutes east, there is Nauticus http://www.nauticus.org/. Here you can walk around the Battleship U.S.S Wisconsin.

In your opinions for a 2 week trip would it be better to visit DC and then do New England or would it be better to base ourselves in Williamsburg for 1 week, do DC and NY.

We thought it might be fun to visit DC and then rent a car and see New England but I'm still torn or whether or not we should pick Williamsburg instead.

If you are looking to just visit DC and NYC i would not pick Williamsburg to stay. DC is a 3 hour drive and NYC is a 7 hour drive from Williamsburg. Stay around Baltimore if you want to do the two cities.

Actually, to get to NY, we would take the train from DC. do you know how long of a train ride that would be?

Train, i.e. Amtrak, from DC to NYC is almost the same as drive time, about 5-6 hours w/stops along route. Not fun...........

IMHO, a better combination of trips would be NY and New England, especially during summer, and DC and Williamsburg in spring or fall (Oct.). A really nice time to visit the Mid-Atlantic as it is quite humid there now.

If you chose NE area now you can drive to Boston and Cape Cod in less time than train ride to DC. Lots to do now up north.

I take the Amtrak from Union Station to Penn Station quite often for work and the trip takes between 3 and 3.5 hours depending on whether you take Acela.

If you look on the Amtrak site, you can see the exact travel times for the different Northeast Corridor trains. Metroliners are pretty fast, definitely faster than driving from D.C. to NYC, and Acelas are even faster, but they cost a lot more.

Thanks for all the info, my travel plans are actually for the end of September and not summertime.

Amtrak has very nice rates for non-USA resident travel. Williamsburg is fine and pretty common for visiting Washington DC, but New York is not a day trip from Williamsburg. Baltimore is 3 1/2 hours by train to New York and about 4 hours to Williamsburg. Unfortunately, Baltimore is a not a hotbed for timeshare resorts. Driving to Richmond and taking Amtrak First Class to New York would be the best bet. Leave Richmond late night and arrive in New York early morning. Sleep on the train and be fresh for the morning. Get back on the train late night and be back in Richmond early the next morning. You could also stop in Washington and add a day to your trip. Amtrak has multi-day unlimited travel passes for visitors to North America.

Williamsburg is a wonderful destination if you love history and/or golf, and if going in the summer there's also Busch Gardens (also fall weekends) and Water Country. There's plenty there for several days.

What time of year? Have you considered the Poconos (fall) or NJ shore & Atlantic City casinos? NJ would be close and a nice visit in the summer or early fall.

I agree that DC is a LONG day trip from Williamsburg - and there is soo much to see in DC. We've been to Wmbg twice and haven't been bored. We've gone in May both trips - not beach weather. Colonial Williamsburg is interesting, Jamestown, Norfolk, the countryside is pretty and there are wineries within driving distance...

Another suggestion for traveling from DC to NY is on a chartered bus my friend uses and just loves...Direct and much more economical over Amtrak...their site is www.vamoosebus.com
