As a family of 4 we often drive to our vacations. I"m getting bored with the same drivable destinations so I"m looking into flying - which can get really expensive. I'm looking for ideas on how to save $$ on airfare - especially since I have to buy 4 seats.
Thanks!

Both hubby and I have Alaska Airlines cards. You get a $50 companion certificate - buy a ticket and get another for $50. We never have a problem using them and it's just the two of us - somebody can always use it.

There's any number of strategies that you can employ but it's a function of your comfort level as to which you use.

Start with www.sidestep.com and www.kayak.com for lower rates.

You can then watch those sites pretty much daily for seat sales, look for last minute flights and of course get on board with a FF program and accumulate miles.

I agree with getting the Alaskan airlines signature mileage card...the companion tickets alone are worth it if you use them right.

There is a $75 yearly fee with the card...but right now they're offering 20,000 bonus miles when you get one which can be applied toward a free ticket.

If you're able to apply all your monthly bills to this one card and then simply pay the card each month...the miles add up fairly quickly. (for a mileage account)

The best place I have found for cheap fares is http://www.farecompare.com

You pick the place you want to leave from (including nearby airports) and they will show you the cheapest fares to anywhere in the world. They do not show some of the low cost carriers in Europe or Jet Blue or Southwest but with the numbers they show, its easy to get low cost fares on American, Delta, Air Tran....

you might also try Site 59 for last minute deals of Airfare, hotel, and/or car for weekend trips up to two weeks out.

Cheers

Southwest

I don't think you can beat Southwest for fares, including non-stop trips, to many destinations. They don't participate in the major search engine websites. You need to go directly to their website... www.southwest.com

I just booked airfare for 4 to Orlando non-stop one way, and from West Palm Beach with 1 stop back home at great rates. Be flexible in your departation airports and times, and you'll save with them.

First, figure out where you might want to travel. Then, figure out which airline you would want to use. Then, get the credit card for that airline, or get a Starwood AMEX. With the AMEX, you can convert to nearly any airline you like, and if you convert 20K points, you get a 5K mileage bonus. One of the few exceptions is converting to UA miles, where the ratio is 2:1 (not good).

We charge everything on our mileage cards. McDonald's, insurance, water bills, timeshares :D , property taxes, etc. I remind my husband that even if it is only $1, to charge it. Of couse he looks at me like I am crazy, but each year, we have been able to book four award seats to one destination. It really works :cheer: !

Earn Miles!

Charge cards attached to mileage programs are great - you'll accumulate more if you charge everything, as suggested above. Of course you have to be careful to pay it all off so you don't get hit with big interest. (If that's a potential problem, apply for a card that has a lot of initial miles and use those for your flight, but don't try to rack up the miles for future flights.)

American Airlines' Citibank cards can give you 20k or 25k miles up front, plus a free companion certificate. (Consider applying for 2 cards - one for each spouse - to double the initial awards.) 25k = a free RT in the continental US, and the companion certificate means a second person files free, so you'll only pay for 2 of the 4 (or only 1 if you've gotten 2 cards). It'll take some advance planning to get flights that have award seats available and that qualify for the companion flight, but you'll save big.

(You'll need to book directly through the airline, but first go to some of the sites suggested above for awhile to get a feel for what discount fares to your desired destination should cost, so you don't end up paying way too much for the 2 paying passengers.)

Alaska Airlines Companion Ticket Question

Both hubby and I have Alaska Airlines cards. You get a $50 companion certificate - buy a ticket and get another for $50. We never have a problem using them and it's just the two of us - somebody can always use it.

I am looking into getting this card - largely for the $50 companion ticket. One question I have however relates to the expiration of the certificates. I assume that the certificate expires one year from date of issue (or something similar). Are you able to book travel that begins after the certificate expires as long as you book it before it expires? I am familiar with Delta's companion certificates and on these all travel must be completed before the certificate expires. Probably not a huge deal either way UNLESS you want to travel with the companion fare shortly after your card anniversary. Then you'd be forced to make last minute reservations which may not be ideal.

Any feedback on the rules of the Alaska certificate would be appreciated. Thanks!
