Least Expensive From the DC Area: Aruba, St. Kitts or St. Thomas?

You mean flight? You're not going to find any direct flights and they're all about the same price, and subject to change. You're stuck doing the research :D

In the honorable tradition of TUG . . .

. . . I hope some will post that disagrees with Mr. Eric in McLean. I concede that there are no direct flights. But I question Mr. in McLean's assertion that the airfares to all the islands are the same.

I generally have found flights to St Thomas to be cheaper, maybe 300-400. Whereas Aruba has consistently been 600-800 (atleast the times I have looked). I think St. Kitts will be closer to Aruba.

I have priced/purchased tickets from DCA-STT for the last 2 "Spring Break" weeks. I have gotten them for about $330 each, after searching nearly every day. Purchased at that price ASAP, when seen. I have not priced the other locations. Also, I think United has a direct flight from IAD to STT. You might want to check/price that route.

I know that Continental flies direct EWR to STT. US Airways used to fly direct Philliy to STT. I think some do exist.

The stopover in San Juan is quick and relatively painless on AA if going to STT.

I recall someone mentioning direct HOU to Aruba.

I think it would be best, though, to check fares for the timeframe you are interested in to each of the destinations. Since St. Thomas and St. Kitts are much more seasonal than Aruba, depending on the time of year you may see large fare variations.

You can easily run the fares on Kayak.com for when you want to go and make an easy comparison. Kayak, btw, gives the full fare (inclusive of taxes) while the above link doesn't include the taxes/fees.

Also- although you didn't ask- again depending on when you want to go- don't let just airfare determine the destination. For example, if you are travelling during hurricane season, there is potentially a big difference between islands.

1. the farecompare page only requires departure city
2. once you click on a destination, it brings up month selection, which shows total price

not perfect by any means, but pretty helpful
