LAX on Saturdays

Is LAX a madhouse on a typical Saturday morning? Basically, how early should I plan to arrive for a 7:00 am Saturday flight, with bags to check?

How about 9:00 am?

I fly into LAX at 10:15 the night before. I'm planning to hole up in a hotel for a few hours to get some shuteye, so I'm trying to figure out what time to leave my hotel Saturday morning based on the above two flight options.

LAX

I would think 2-2 1/2 hrs if it is an international and 1- 11/2 for domestic

LAX is such a crap shoot with a whole lot of variables you can't often predict. I'm local and would never consider arriving at the terminal less than 2 hours before any flight. Often we arrive 2-1/2 to 3 hours early just to allow for the unexpected delays in check in and security screenings.

You never really know what you are in for.

Can you check your bags through to your final destination, only bringing the essentials for a night's rest with you to the hotel? That might cut back on a lot of time, allowing you to go directly to the security line in the morning instead of waiting in one line to check bags, and another to go through security.

I had hoped to do that, but I'll be flying into LA on United, and departing the next morning via another airline - likely ATA. I asked ATA if I could check the bags the night before, but they told me I could only check the bags three hours in advance. I didn't think to call United and ask if they could check it straight through for me. That's a good idea. That would save me a boatload of time and effort.

For what it's worth, United and ATA are on opposite sides of the terminal horseshoe.

ATA is in terminal 3 which may have been former Northwest air gates if memory serves correct. It's an older style terminal (high ceilings) that was updated recently and is comfortable in any event. We flew ATA last May and I appreciated that terminal.

United is across the airport with two terminals (7 & 8) and a smattering of flights in terminal 6. I wouldn't trust them to get my bag across the terminal. I barely have confidence it will show up in baggage claim with UAL.
