future weather issues
Hi all,
I have a trip booked to Cancun 9/22-9/29/2007. With the impending hurricane I was wondering what would happen to reservations should the area be devastated as with Wilma in 2005. As I am an owner at the resort I booked it direct (not thru RCI) My maintence fees as well as the all inclusive fee's are all paid. I am fairly new to time shares so of course I didn't think about it until now! Thanks, Steve |

If your resort is heavily damaged, you probably have no vacation. Whether the resort tries to make other arrangements for you will depend entirely on the resort.
No sense worrying about it for a couple of days. After the storm passes, you can check in with your resort. Hope they have good insurance. Sheila |

In general terms it is the responsibility of the traveller to ensure that they have adequate insurance in place to cover potential problems. In the example above, the resort may arrange alternative accommodation, in another resort or on alternative dates. If that happened they would not accept responsibility for additional costs incurred in changing flights etc.
If the airline cancelled flights to the location you would in all probability get a refund. If, on the other hand, flights were available, but your accommodation was not, the airline has fulfilled its responsibility to you and would have no obligation to refund flight costs.

The question of the 'All inclusive' element of your annual fees is an interesting one. If the resort is not functioning it would seem logical that that element should be refunded. Maintenance fee will probably be retained irrespective as the monies may be required for refurbs anyway.

Steve:
Great advice so far. Next trip, ask about the travel insurance at the time of booking. Most plans don't let you buy it after the trip deposit, for the very reason you mention....suppose a hurricane is coming... All inclusive fees are normally a pre-paid deal you have to do at some resorts. The question is - do you get them back? Some resorts give all fees back if you have to cancel from a hurricane, but that's the exception rather than the rule. They bought some business insurance to do that, which is what HOA's do to protect their units. But, that has nothing to do with getting you back home or medical evacuation or needs. It's only trying to cover you for lost lodging, usually on an immediate basis in a location that is already affected. Most of us rely on buying individual travel insurance to have better options.
