If you like things nautical you could consider driving I95 and stoping at Mystic, CT. They have a very nice museum called Mystic Seaport (http://www.mysticseaport.org).

I haven't been in a long time but growing up in CT it was a favorite place.

It's a crapshoot - both routes commonly clog up along the way, but 95 will get you closer to LI.

I prefer 84 all the way to ny but have you thought about just staying on 95 and taking the new london ferry? you don't save any time but it's a nice trip and you avoid the ct and nyc traffic.

You might want to visit Strawberry Fields in Portsmouth, NH. It's a very old settlement. We went once in the dead of winter and it was still interesting. They give guided tours of the buildings there.

Come across the Mass Pike, down the Taconic Parkway, and cross the Hudson River at the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge (we live in Kingston). The view is spectacular - altho not *quite* peak yet. Then as you drive down towards NYC, find an excuse to take the Tappan Zee Bridge (instead of the GW) - today, it was also gorgeous - sailboats out, stunning waves of colors )more green still than autumn colors) - looked better coming back home from NYC than going down. This is not the shortest way to get home - but it sure is pretty.
