Smuggs 1 in 4 enforcement by RCI ?

Hi there

We own in SA and have traded in to Smuggs every fall since 2000. This year I have two units for 2008 and wanted to get a third, so a bunch of friends can all be up there at the same time. I called while we RCI while we were at Smuggs and was told I could not reserve the 08 week because of the Smuggs 1 in 4 rule. I've come up against this in the past and just explained that the rule is only enforced by Smuggs during the busy season, this counsellor did not allow me to take the week. Smuggs is dead this time of year and I'm sure they have no problem with it - what is up? Any ideas how to avoid this problem? I was just going to call RCI back and keep trying different counsellors, but if any of you have a better solution, let me know!

The one in four rule doesn't apply to multiple units taken during the same week anyway. Is that what you are looking to do?

I think the 1 in 4 was only recently instituted - perhaps last year, a year and a half ago? If you had confirmed exchanges before the rule was put into effect, those exchanges would be grandfathered in and the 1 in 4 wouldn't cause them to be cancelled. But, any other exchanges that you make would have the 1 in 4 applied. Therefore, since you've exchanged into Smuggs in 2007, you can't make new exchanges for 2008. And, if you made exchanges for 2008, the next time you could exchange in would be 2012.

I believe that it's the resort that does the enforcing of the 1 in 4. Even if RCI put the exchange through, it's possible and not unlikely that the resort could cancel it, even on short notice. ie refuse to let you check in.

Leaf peeping season - mid- September to 2nd week October is actually a pretty popular time at Smuggs.
