I decided to check the rates just now for my trip this Saturday to Vegas. The rates have gone down today. I was able to cancel my Alamo confirmation via Costco to get a better rate. Using a Wild Car Standard Special on Carrentals.com, we now have a midsize or larger car for a week @$98.80. With the tax this comes to $151.
We've had our Alamo confirmation since September. We would have paid $153.30 for a compact. * Alamo also charges $3.50 per week for a frequent flyer service charge. I also decided to check the rates for our trip to HHI via Savannah during Xmas week. I'm now paying a total of $126.91 rather than the $147.80 with Alamo. Now, we're happy! ![]() |

From your post I went to carrentals.com to see what I might get for my MB rental next week, also from Alamo.
However through COSTCO Alamo was still a better rate. But glad you posted about it, as I'll keep checking back with both sites for the best rate. But, damn it I called the 800 Alamo # toadd my husband as a driver and talked with someone in India! Gosh I hate most of this Nation's outsorcing. Nothing against anyone, but I want to speak with someone in the USA - sorry if I offend anyone. |

My experience with CarRentals has been that they are really good for last minute rentals. Last summer, I used them for my SoCal trip and they beat all rates all over the internet (including costco).

I've used CarRentals.com and been happy with their prices.
When I make a reservation, I usually reserve the cheapest car with the hope of an inexpensive upgrade to a nicer car. I've had pretty good luck with this. In fact, this is a reason that I don't like to rent through Priceline. With PriceLine, you book it and pay for it in advance. Since it's prepaid, I don't think the local rental office has flexibility to upgrade you for an additional amount. Is this right? The other thing I don't like about Priceline is that they're non-refundable. Booking directly (or with CarRentals.com), you don't have to pre-pay, or even give your credit card number. No problem with cancellation. Ron |
