Question Expiring FF miles in kids' names, how to extend?

My kids have accounts with UA, and my DH has an account with AA. I want to make some purchases to extend their miles. Do I sign them each up for an account on the online shopping sites? Can I sign up a child and use my credit card to make the purchases?

The answer to all your questions is yes. The shopping miles can take a long time to post (2-3 months). Do the miles expire before then?

If the miles are good for 18 months past when they were earned, the earliest they expire is 3/08 (earned 9/06) and then 5/08 (earned 11/06). I think I am figuring it right.

I ordered Teen Vogue for my daughter for 400 miles and it extended for 18 months and posted within a week since I did it through AA. You can also donate 500 miles to Make a Wish.

See if

www.points.com

has a bonus offer to join from the airline in question. It may be only 20-40 miles but it may be the thing to do to keep it active.

The fastest way to get miles that I know of (other than flying) is to earn them through the dining programs. Every major airline offers dining miles.
For United, go to http://mpdining.rewardsnetwork.com/ and sign up your children. Link a different one of your credit cards to each of their accounts. Then all you have to do is eat out at a MileagePlus Dining restaurant and pay with the linked credit card. The miles should post in a couple of days. Warning: Some restaurants don't award miles every day. Restaurants drop out of the program with little or no notice. Check online carefully before going to a restaurant to be sure that it's still in the program and is awarding miles at the time you're going.

I Have my credit card linked to son's FF miles for restaurant dining. If I link mine to the same credit card, what then happens? How would the miles be posted? Do both accounts get mileage?

Look here - http://frequentflier.com/search_program.php

You can do a search for ways to earn mileage for the United Mileage Plus program. It lists MANY different options.
