During a trip to HHI, we plan to visit Charleston. Can anyone tell me how long of a drive is it to Charleston and what is not to miss while we are there. This will be our first time to visit.

Most ts on HH will have a weekly planned trip. I know Marriott does. It is 2 and a half to 3 hours North of HH. You can go to the chamber when you come inot town. They will have guided tours. You can take a horse and buggy tour. When you are at the chamber you can pick up maps of the city and do a walking tour. We have made the trip 4 times and tried all the ways . I would call the chamber and have them send info to you ahead of your trip.

Bobcat, I was questioning your time estimate because the two places are not that far from each other. So I checked with Mapquest and they confirmed it at 2.25 hrs. It still doesn't sound right to me, but I guess I'm starting to come down with the Time/Space Differential problem that runs rampant here with Florida residents.

That's exactly what it takes me, and I've made the drive numerous times.

You might be thinking about (or should consider) Savannah Georgia which is only about one hour from Hilton Head Island. Last year we went to HHI and spent one night and 2 days in Savannah before checking in at HHI, and we loved it. This is where the Food Network's first lady, Paula Dean, has her original restaurant. We stayed at a bed and breakfast called the Gastonian and took the trolley tour all over town for 2 days. Lots of historical bldgs, churches, parks, and statues. Lots of bed and breakfasts listed on the internet.

I have visited both Charleston and Savannah, and I like both equally well. Both have a great history, both are lovely, and both feel very safe. I liken both cities to a really nice New Orleans without the drunken thugs. You can look at a map and see how much closer Savannah is than Charleston. If I ever return to HHI, I will definetelly spend at least a day at Savannah again, and if you visit there you won't be disappointed.

We will be visiting HHI over Christmas week and were planning to visit Savannah and possibly Charleston. We will be staying at the Marriott Grand Ocean. What other sites should we consider taking in?

From HHI, Beaufort SC is a fine city to visit, with lovely historic homes, art galleries, diverse dining options, and a really nice walkable old town ambience.

I received an offer from Bluegreen Resorts for 2 nights and 3 days in a nice hotel in Charleston for taking the timeshare tour of their Lodge Alley Inn resort. I think it was $100 to $150 and you get $50 for meals and a horse carriage ride. Just a thought to get cheap rooms for Charleston SC.

We were just in HHI last week and drove to the Savannah historic district using the "short cut" twice in less than an hour. We drove from Myrtle Beach to Charleston in about two hours twice also. The drive from Charleston to HHI seemed to be about two and a half hours. Maybe it seemed longer because there was no high speed interstate.

It also depends on the traffic.
