Expedia Hotel Cancellation Caveat

As posted in another thread, I recently had to cancel travel plans due to the wildfires in California. Part of my plans included a layover in Las Vegas and hotel accomodations.

The Expedia site warns that there may be penalties for cancelling reservations at their Value Rate motels. There's no mention of other reservations.

The motel I booked wasn't on the Value Rate list, and the webpage of the motel on Expedia had a "policies" section, but there was no mention of cancellation policy. There was also no mention of any penalty when I did the online cancellation on Expedia.

Well, sure enough, I got my Visa bill this week, and there was a billing for a night's stay and taxes for the cancelled reservation.

I will attempt to iron this out with the motel, but I'm not optimistic. Bottom line- if there's any chance your travel plans may change, expect a cancellation penalty, whether the travel search website tells you about it or not.

It's for that very reason that after finding a rate I like (hotel or air) on a travel search site, I try to match the rate or find a better rate with the hotel or airline. I have almost always been successful in doing so. If I need to cancel or make a change, it's almost always easier to deal directly with the airline or hotel chain and, as you suggest, sometimes avoid some cancellation fees that otherwise might not apply.
