First Cruise - Debarking Time?

Let me ask the reverse of a question that was recently posted. How soon are you required to LEAVE the ship after it returns to port?

My cruise returns to Long Beach at 8:00 AM. But my flight home isn't until 5:00 PM. So I'd like to kill a few hours along the way. Can one usually stay on board the ship until late morning? Or what?

I don't have a lot of cruise experience but no, they hussle you off pretty quickly. Basically it's like a hotel check out time - they need the time to get things cleaned up and ready for the next group of guests so they really can't let people stay on for their convenience.

You might be able to stay on until 10:30 AM, or perhaps 11 AM, but that is about the latest. You can be the last people off the ship, they will call for you when everybody else is gone.

The only time we have been able to stay on the ship was in Papette, Tahiti. We were on a Princess cruise. Our flight didn't leave til a little after midnight. Other passengers had various other flights. We all had to leave our staterooms by 10:00 a.m. We checked our carryon with the ship's personnel and then went on a tour. Others chose not to do a tour. Afterwards, we were allowed to use the ship's common areas until they called each group to go to the airport. We were also allowed to eat our meals, gratis, on the ship. We had to pay cash for any alcohol.

I was really supprised that they were able to handle all of us, the departees and the arrivals, at one time. Princess really did a bang up job of taking care of us.

I've only been on one cruise, so I don't have much experience . . . We arrived in port at 6:00 a.m and we were asked to leave our rooms by 8:00am. They provided either a sit down breakfast (which we did) or a buffet breakfast. They seem to hussle us through breakfast pretty quickly! After that we just were sitting around waiting. They had TV's on in several different areas and had some beverages (coffee, tea, juice) available. We had to wait for the ship to be cleared through the port customs and for some reason there was a delay. We got off about an hour later than we were supposed to.

I think prior to your cruise they ask what your departure arrangements are and try to get the people with the earliest flights off first.

I would suggest inquiring with your travel agent or the cruise lines. It's really not too exciting being on the ship cause nothing is really up and running and you really get the feeling they need you off to get ready for the next cruise!

We have been on 3 cruises and you will find they want to clear the ship for the next cruise all bars and things are closed down for restocking for the next cruise
The early flights or if you have a early connection get of first and then if you no connections to go to you get of next the later you stay on the ship it gets boring to be there the latest we have been of is 10.30

NCL made us leave our Alaskan cruise at about 10:30 a.m. in Seattle. There was a luggage concierge at the dock where you could check your luggage until about 3:30 p.m. (in order to do some sightseeing) for $3 apiece. We used the luggage concierge for our carryons. We used the "BAGS" program (for $15 a person) that carried to the airport and check-in our baggage the night prior to leaving the cruise ship. We also received our boarding passes the night before leaving the ship. Great service!!

NCL, will for a fee take, your luggage to the airport through security so all you have to do is get on the plane. This would work for you if your leaving home. This option allows you to eat breakfast early then go play until you have to leave. Your luggage isnt weighed in with this service so your luggage can be overweight without paying extra.

Thanks to everyone for the comments. Sounds like I won't be able to kill much time aboard the boat after the cruise. I'll plan accordingly. :-)
