Hotel recommendations for Rockville, MD area?
My DH has two business trips coming up to Rockville, MD. He will be flying into Dulles (IAD). Does anyone know anything about the Sheraton or Hilton in Rockville? Are there any timeshares in that area?
If it were me, I'd stay in D.C. and take the Metro , but he wants to stay close to his business meetings. Thanks for any help! |

Denise, there are no timeshares in the Rockville area. While i am not familiar with either the Hotel, he will be fine with either, especially if he wants to be close to the meetings.

There are some Metro stops in Rockville if he'd like to go into DC. Looks like the Sheraton is in the Shady Grove area, which is very nice. Lots of biotech industry there. Also, there is a Metro stop in this area. Here's the link to the Metro map:

I would definitely take the parkway on the VA side of the Potomac up across the MD border and then continue on 119 north.

I'm not sure what those directions are for but they don't work for IAD (maybe DCA) .... from IAD to Rockville it's the Dulles Access Road to I-495 to I-270 and then the first few exits are for different parts of Rockville all the way up to Shady Grove and Gaithersburg, don't know where those hotels are.

Definetly my neck of the woods.
I would recommend the Marriott in the Washingtonian Center. The hotel is off of 270. Take the 370 south for short left and turn left on Washingtonian blvd. This Hilton is not very nice and not much around it. The Washingtonian center has stores, restaurants, a small lake, very nice.

Thanks, everyone, for the great suggestions!
DH insisted on being super close to Rockville, so I put him in the Sheraton Rockville Hotel. He didn't get a better room with his SPG Gold Preferred status, so I had to call the hotel today and he will be able to change to a Club Level room tonight, if he wants to. He also told me that there isn't a refrigerator (timeshares spoil us, but usually there is a minibar, or have those been eliminated in hotel rooms?), and traffic was miserable last night. He'll be going back in a week or so. Hopefully I can convince him to stay elsewhere and take the Metro to Rockville. That's what I would do. Why sit in traffic for two hours going 35 miles?! I'll check out the Marriott online! |

Getting from Dulles to Rockville can be a real pain if you try it during either the morning or evening rush hours. One way to get around the mess on the Beltway and 270 is from IAD take the "Greenway" (a private toll road right outside the airport) to Leesburg, get on Rte 15 (first the bypass around Leesburg) then 15 into Maryland. Then follow signs to Rockville or get a map and/or directions from the car rental people. You can also take "White's Ferry" across the Potomac off of Rte 15 just north of Leesburg but you should know what you are doing if you try that. Welcome to the DC area, Dave

I agree with everything you say here, but wouldn't necessarily recommend the route up 15 either. It's 50 minutes to Frederick and another 30 minutes from Frederick to Rockville. Plus it's not as smooth sailing as it used to be. The Greenway backs up getting off onto 15 and 15 can be congested.
I'd think about having coffee (morning) or dinner (evening) closer to Dulles and waiting out the rush hour mess that is DC. ...Or just fly into another airport or make sure the arrival time is between 10-2 or after 7pm. Quote:
